Alabama softball finished the T-Mobile Crimson Classic this weekend undefeated, advancing to 20-0 on the season. Each game was dedicated to a different senior on the team.
So far, out of Alabama’s 20 wins, 12 of those have been shutouts. That trend continued this past weekend, as the Crimson Tide blanked opponents four times across six games.
On Friday, Alabama shut out St. Thomas 2-0 to begin the weekend. Alabama scored both runs in the first inning off an Alexis Pupillo home run to center left.
Pitcher Jocelyn Briski pitched the entire game against the Tommies, allowing no runs and striking out a career high of 14 batters.
In the second game on Friday, Alabama run-ruled USF for its second shutout of the day. The first three innings went scoreless for both teams until Alabama scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Infielder Salen Hawkins kicked off the scoring, bringing outfielder Ana Roman in with an RBI single. Outfielder Audrey Vandagriff followed suit, bringing in two, with a single up the middle.
Roman secured the next three runs, with a single to the left bringing in two and scoring herself on a fielder’s choice. Outfielder Lauren Johnson ended the game early, 8-0 with a two-run double due to the run-rule.
Saturday, Alabama kicked off the day defeating Kent State 8-1. Kent State struck first during the first inning with a fielder’s choice but was unable to score again.
Roman brought in Alabama’s first two scores with a single to the right side in the first, raising her weekend tally to four runs.
During the second game, the Crimson Tide run-ruled USF 8-0. Infielder Brooke Wells kicked off the scoring with a home run in the first inning.
Alabama continued to score, advancing to 4-0 in the third inning while holding USF hitless. Marlie Giles ended the game 8-0 in the fourth inning with a grand slam to left field.
“In the fourth inning against USF, the Marlie Giles grand slam was a huge momentum switch,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “We’ve had a great start to the season, but I still think we have some room for improvements and adjustments to make.”
On the final day of the tournament, Alabama brought home two more wins to close out the weekend undefeated.
In the first game, Alabama shut out St. Thomas once more, 7-0. Freshman pitcher Vic Moten allowed just one hit against the Tommies. In the two games Moten pitched, she allowed only one hit in each.
The majority of Alabama’s scoring came in the fifth inning. Giles kicked off the fifth scoring from third after an errant throw from St. Thomas.
Pupillo ended the game 7-0 in the fifth with a home run down right field. She currently leads the team in home runs for the season with a total of eight.
Alabama faced off against Oakland in its second game on Sunday, winning 8-1. The first inning went by without any scoring from either side. Wells kicked off the scoring again for the Crimson Tide in the second inning.
In the third, Oakland tied the game 1-1 after an RBI single, but Alabama didn’t let that last for long. Infielder Ambrey Taylor came into the fourth inning and hit a three-run home run, advancing the score 4-1.
Oakland was unable to come back and remained runless the rest of the game. Alabama continued to rack up runs, with Roman hitting a two-run home run in the fourth as well, and Kinley Pate and Kristen White scored on a single. Pupillo wrapped up the game with an RBI single, bringing the game to 8-1.
“It was a long weekend with a doubleheader every day, but it feels good to be 20-0 right now during non-conference play,” Murphy said.
Alabama will play again Friday in Oxford against Ole Miss at 6 p.m. CT.
