Gymnastics places second in Purple and Gold Podium Challenge

Alabama placed second in its first quad meet of the season with a score of 197.65. LSU placed first with a 198.2, the University of North Carolina placed third with a 195.95, and the University of Arizona was last with a 195.

Like in post season competitions, this quad meet was competed on podium, which is an elevated floor for all of the apparatuses.

“I thought the team did a great job of possessing the podium,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “We talked about attacking your first turn, and they absolutely did that.”

    Rotation 1

For the first rotation of the night, Alabama was on the uneven bars, LSU was on the vault, UNC was on the balance beam, and Arizona was on the floor.

After Rotation 1, Alabama made a 49.5. On the uneven bars, freshman Azaray Ra-Akbar posted a 9.975 as the Crimson Tide’s highest scorer and clinched the uneven bars title.

    Rotation 2

Alabama was on the balance beam for the second rotation. LSU moved to the uneven bars, UNC to floor, and Arizona to vault. Alabama made a 49.175 on the balance beam, one of its lowest scores of the season.

After two rotations, Alabama had 98.675, LSU had 99.025, UNC had 97.625 and Arizona had 97.075.

“I think sticks are contagious,” Johnston said. “I think as we started off that lineup and couldn’t quite hold onto some landings, we just couldn’t quite create the momentum that we wanted to be there on landings.”

Alabama’s highest scorer was sophomore Kylee Kvamme, who posted a 9.925. LSU’s Kailin Chio made a 10 on the balance beam to take the title.

    Rotation 3

The Crimson Tide moved to the floor for Rotation 3. LSU was on the balance beam, UNC was on the vault and Arizona was on the uneven bars. On the floor, Alabama posted a 49.6 to bring its total to 148.275.

All five of Alabama’s counted scores were in the range of 9.9 or higher.

“I think all six actually were lights out in really rocky energy, put landings down in a fierce way,” Johnston said. “A lot of performances that I would say were their best performances of the season.”

On the floor, senior Gabby Gladieux made a 9.95 to mark the Crimson Tide’s highest score, though LSU’s Kylie Coen took the floor title with a 9.975.

    Rotation 4

For the Crimson Tide’s final rotation, the team moved to the vault. On the vault, Alabama made a 49.375. LSU was on the floor, UNC was on the uneven bars and Arizona was on the balance beam.

On the vault, senior Jordyn Paradise was the Crimson Tide’s highest scorer after making a 9.925. However, LSU’s Amari Drayton took the event title with a score of 9.95.

Gladieux took the all-around title with a 39.575.

The Crimson Tide will be back in action on Friday at Coleman Coliseum against the Kentucky Wildcats. The meet is set to start at 6:30 p.m. CT, and it can be streamed on SEC Network+.

“I know that this group is hungry,” Johnston said. “They’re going to work it out this week to be sure they’re able to put those [stuck landings] down in more of a confident way.”
