ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An iconic piece of television history has arrived at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester. The “Wheel of Fortune” puzzle board, used on the show until 1997, made its way to the museum after a six-day journey across the country.
This version of the puzzle board required Vanna White to hand-turn the letters before the show switched to digital screens. It will be the centerpiece of the upcoming “Beyond the Buzzer” exhibit, which will explore the history of game shows in America.
“It has been such a part of the American media landscape,” said Christopher Bensch. “Even today, people say oh, ‘I’ll take a vowel.’ And that’s the kind of thing that is catchphrases or ‘come on down.’ It is things we all know about , and we want the people who come to this exhibit to feel, for a moment at least, like they’re a contestant on a game show.”
The puzzle board’s size required a portion of the museum wall to be opened to bring it inside. The new exhibit is set to open in 2028.
