Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi addressed his citizens on Sunday, amid escalating regional tensions and concerns about security and economic repercussions following the US-Israeli assault on Iran.
Speaking at an Iftar banquet for the Armed Forces, attended by state leaders, Sisi said, “The issue of the hour is the current crisis and the war in the region.”
He assured that the state is taking precautions, but emphasized that the duration of the crisis remains uncertain.
Egypt has made “sincere efforts over the past months to avert the crisis, bridge gaps, and mediate between the US and Iran to reach an agreement,” he said.
“The repercussions of wars have a significant impact on the balance of power, and not only due to the humanitarian dimension,” Sisi explained, adding that the developments in the past two days have been rapid and significant.
The President expressed skepticism about the possibility of now halting the war, saying, “Egypt has been keen to emphasize the importance of de-escalation, achieving calm, and even stopping the war, although I doubt that this will be achieved.”
He stressed his rejection to attacks on “our brothers in the Gulf and Arab countries.”
Strait of Hormuz and Suez Canal impacted by war
Sisi voiced Egypt’s concerns about the consequences of war and the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as its impact on the Suez Canal.
He explained that the canal has not yet recovered since October 7, 2023, and that shipping traffic has not returned to normal, resulting in financial losses for the country.
Addressing his citizens, he added, “The closure of the Strait of Hormuz will affect oil flows and prices. The Egyptian state and government must study all possibilities and different scenarios. I say to the people, ‘There is no need to worry, God willing. We have been careful to take the necessary precautions, I assure you.'”
Sisi emphasized the importance of “the state and the people being one,” stressing that “the most important reasons for success in Egypt are stability and steadfastness.”
“Since 2020, we have been going through difficult circumstances: the coronavirus pandemic for a year and a half, with its economic repercussions, followed by the war in Ukraine, then the war in Gaza, and finally the Iranian war.”
Sisi affirmed that the state is dealing with crises with “patience, composure, and without haste.”
“Rest assured about Egypt; by God’s grace, no one can harm this country.”
