Ford, who has worked in film and television for more than six decades, fought back tears as he began his speech.

“I feel incredibly grateful for this kind of attention, but to be clear, I also am quite humbled,” he said. He joked that while many actors in the room were nominated for recent performances, he was there “to receive a prize for being alive.”

The comment made the audience laugh, but it also showed his modest side. He added, “It’s a little weird to be getting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the half-point of my career. It’s a little early, isn’t it? I’m still a working actor.”

Ford shared that he was not an overnight success. For 15 years, he moved between acting jobs and carpentry work before landing a role in a “wildly successful film.” That film was the firstStar Wars movie, directed by George Lucas. He also thanked Steven Spielberg, who directed him in the Indiana Jones films.

“In my third year of college, I was a little lost,” Ford said. “I felt isolated and alone, and then I found a company of people putting on plays.” He explained that those people became “my people.” Through acting, he found purpose and a sense of belonging.

He also spoke about how much he values teamwork. “The work I do with other actors is one of the great joys of my life,” he said. He thanked writers, directors, crew members and castmates who helped build his long career.

As someone who grew up watching Ford fly the Millennium Falcon or crack a whip as Indiana Jones, seeing him speak so openly felt different. He is often known for playing tough heroes, but on this night, he showed a softer side.

Ford ended his speech by thanking his “extraordinary, beautiful wife, Calista,” and his family. “I’m indeed a lucky guy,” he said. “Lucky to have found my people, lucky to have work that challenges me and lucky to be still doing it. I don’t take that for granted.”

The emotional speech came during a rare public appearance with Flockhart. The couple, who married in 2010, walked the red carpet together at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. They wore matching black outfits, with Ford adding black-rimmed glasses to his tuxedo, while Flockhart wore a one-shoulder gown with silver earrings.

Ford became the 61st recipient of the Life Achievement Award, joining past honorees such as Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro.

Despite the lifetime honor, Ford shows no signs of slowing down. He recently earned his first Emmy nomination for his role in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, where he plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a senior therapist living with Parkinson’s disease.

Even at 83, Ford made it clear he is not finished. And judging by the tears, applause and heartfelt reactions from peers and fans, Hollywood is grateful he’s still here.
