The CIF state wrestling championships wrapped up on Saturday in Bakersfield, and numerous Bay Area wrestlers took home individual titles.
As usual, Gilroy led the way, finishing fifth in the state on the boys side and sixth on the girls. Buchanan of Clovis won both the boys and girls team competitions.
In the boys competition, Gilroy’s Moses Mendoza (138 pounds) and Liberty’s David Calkins Jr. (215) won individual championships. Oakland Tech’s Shayna Ward (135) won a title on the girls side.
Mendoza won by decision over Buchanan’s CJ Huerta, earning a technical fall in the third period with a score of 24-8. It is his second consecutive state title, as he won the 132-pound bracket last year.

Ward was the only Bay Area wrestler to win a state title by fall, pinning Orange Vista’s Zahra Stewart just under a minute into the third period. Ward was previously a state runner-up at 120 in 2024.
