‘The Sopranos’ Creator Looks Back on Original Script Where Nobody Got Killed

It's almost impossible to imagine The Sopranos without the mob hits, betrayals, drugs, and brutal violence that defined the series. Would it still be considered one of the greatest shows ever made without all of that?

According to creator David Chase, it nearly happened. According to People, during a panel discussion at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City on Feb. 26, Chase revealed that when he was pitching the show to traditional networks, he had a version that was far less violent than the one that ultimately aired. In fact, he admitted that in the early draft, "nobody got killed."

Despite toning it down to appease networks like Fox, they still passed on it.

“Everybody turned it down. But I did a rewrite. See, the first draft that I did, which was for Fox…nobody got killed because it was a network show,” Chase shared. “I thought, ‘I can't have a murder. I can't have somebody…have Tony [Soprano] kill somebody.’ And then they didn't do it.”

Chase shared that he ultimately returned to the original version, restoring the violence that fans have come to associate with the series, a decision that made the story of an Italian-American mob boss feel far more authentic.

"I rewrote it and I put in a murder, that Chris kills this Czechoslovakian guy, and that then sold,” he shared on the panel.

'The Sopranos' Cast Reunited for the Show's 25th Anniversary in 2024

In June 2024, the cast reunited for the show's 25th anniversary, sharing memories of working with the late James Gandolfini, whose portrayal of mob boss Tony Soprano remains one of television's most iconic performances.

"They loved him because Jim had some magic in him, but you saw this damaged heart or something in that character," Steve Schirripa shared with Today, who portrayed Bobby Baccalieri in the series.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who played Tony's daughter Meadow Soprano, also reflected on working with Gandolfini before he died in 2013.

“I felt protected by him and loved by him. And he really was one of a kind, and I feel very lucky to have been guided by him for as long as I was," she said.

The Sopranos aired for six seasons from 1999 to 2007, with its final episode delivering one of the most-talked-about endings in television history.
