Mater Dei’s girls water polo team closed its season Saturday with a title.
The Monarchs defeated San Marcos 11-7 to capture the Division I crown at the CIF Southern California Regional at Long Beach City College.
Mater Dei (31-3) won the regional after falling to Oaks Christian 11-8 in the CIF-SS Open Division final on Feb. 21.
The Monarchs received a spark in the first period from goalie Sienna Sorensen, who blocked a penalty shot. On the ensuing possession, Paige Segesman scored from center for a 2-0 lead.
Mater Dei led 5-3 at halftime and wasn’t caught in the second half.
The Monarchs played the match without coach Chris Segesman, who received a red card in a 9-7 semifinal victory against Newport Harbor.
