Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane were known for playing best friends on Grey's Anatomy—but now Dempsey is revealing they nearly played on-screen brothers.
In an interview with Metro UK, Dempsey revealed that he tried to get Dane a spot on his new Fox series Memory of a Killer as his character Angelo's brother, who is suffering from advanced dementia just as Angelo receives a diagnosis for it.
"I tried to get him hired to play my brother in the show," Dempsey said. "His agent had reached out, and we were trying to make it work, but it’s just so shocking how rapidly the disease progressed."
Dempsey first shared that he tried to get his former co-star a spot on the show in an exclusive interview with Parade in January, but did not reveal what the role was until now.
“We were trying to get him in [Memory of a Killer] but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible,” Dempsey said at the time. “But I was happy to see that he was here in Toronto working on, I think, another medical drama [Brilliant Minds].”
Dane died at the age of 53 on Thursday, Feb. 19 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
"He was a remarkable actor and a remarkable man to work with, and he is deeply missed," Dempsey added. "He gave everything he could to bring awareness to his disease at the very end. I know it was very physically difficult for him, but it was incredibly honorable that he did it, and he stayed strong, and he fought as long as he could, and now he's in a peaceful place."

Dempsey and Dane starred on Grey’s Anatomy together from 2006 to 2012. On the show, the pair played best friends Dr. Derek Shepherd and Dr. Mark Sloan — who were dubbed “McDreamy” and “McSteamy,” respectively.
In Memory of a Killer, Dempsey has taken on an entirely different type of role, portraying a contract killer and family man struggling to keep his two lives separate as his memory begins to fail.
