Maggie Gyllenhaal andJake Gyllenhaal are both superstars in their own right, having been born to director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Achs and beginning to act as children. However, Jake got a little more famous a little faster, and Maggie admitted in a new interview that it put a strain on their sibling relationship.
"There absolutely is enough [work] to go around. But I don’t think I knew that at first, when I was young and Jake was a movie star right away," she told The New York Times on Feb. 28 while discussing her new film The Bride!. "I don’t think I was in touch with the envy, but it was there."

Though Maggie insists they've "never been estranged," as some fans have speculated, they've gotten closer in recent years. “In the past, I’ve had to be separate from my family, from my brother,” she said. “Like, cool, I’ve got my own thing going. We both started so young."

Now, she's happy to close that gap. "We’ve never been as close as we are now," she said. “We’re finally, maybe in the last five years, more and more and more, even each day, really interacting, which is hard for people to do.”
Part of that closeness may come from the fact that Maggie is now directing her brother in The Bride!, which features Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, Jessie Buckley as the the bride of Frankenstein, and Jake as an actor named Ronnie Reed.

Maggie recalled the tense moment she asked her sibling to be a part of the film, saying, “I waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part was the right thing to do."
"I remember asking him and tearing up alone in this hotel room I was in, because it meant so much to me," she continued. "It meant so much for me to interact with him.” She added that the move "was just a really honest, vulnerable, what’s underneath rage, reaching out," because she "wanted to interact" with him.
To steel herself to do it, she had to remind herself that she wasn't "asking him to do something that he can’t do," but "making an offer, which is a generous thing to do.”
The Bride! is set to be released in theaters on March 6, 2026.
