Did you see Ozzie Guillen’s oopsie last night? The former White Sox coach was tricked by some fake Facebook news that Mike Ditka had passed away (he is still alive), posting the following on X “Chicago lost a legend. Coach we had many laughs, stories and real talks. I always admired your style nobody did it like you. But more than that, I’m grateful for the advice, knowledge the way you always kept it real with me.”
Nice message. Maybe now’s the time to go tell him that in person. Good reminder for all of us, I think.

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) February 27, 2026 Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune) caught up with Cabrera after his performance and the bottom line, he was quoted through a grin, was that it felt “good, very good.” I just wish we could have actually seen it. One thing Edward Cabrera is reportedly working on this spring is re-introducing his four-seamer. Cabrera cut his usage of that pitch in half last season, and to an extent, that worked for him. But, as Montemurro coaxed out of him, he’d like to have it back. “That’s one thing that I want to do, I want to throw it more,” Cabrera said through an interpreter. “If I want to throw it outside, throw it outside. That’s what every pitcher strives for.” The Cubs, for their part, are trying not to change too much too fast, with Counsell saying the trade was less about what they could change or add to his profile but rather him just coming into the right part of his career. We’ve talked about the rotation plenty this offseason, but I am just so excited by the upside in this group. Cabrera and Cade Horton have ace potential. Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, and Justin Steele have legitimate #2 potential. Jameson Taillon has #3 potential and a very high floor. And Colin Rea and Javier Assad are excellent depth types with solid #4 upside. I know that’s all subjective, but that’s where I’d rank them. And eight big league caliber starting pitchers you can easily justify as having at least #4 upside is just not a position in which the Cubs have found themselves very often. Alex Bregman also had a nice game yesterday, by the way, going 2-3 with a double. Meanwhile, Dansby Swanson went deep, and Scott Kingery did too.Dansby Swanson two-run BOMB! ? pic.twitter.com/dz5mb1FutV
— Cubs Insider (@realcubsinsider) February 27, 2026 Speaking of Bregman, I wonder if he’s going to bat second this season. He’s hit there a lot this spring and every mock lineup I see in the comment section or on social media has him there, but I’m not sure if he will or not. I suppose it depends on who’s leading off. If Michael Busch, a lefty, is in the first spot, you will probably want a righty to bat second, but is that going to be Bregman or Suzuki? Suzuki’s turn towards power last season might make him better suited for cleanup, but also … with his knowledge of the strikezone and the ABS (robo umps) in place this year, I could see his OBP exploding. Suzuki isn’t definitely the Cubs best hitter, but he absolutely could be, so I do wonder if he ultimately winds up batting higher than Bregman.Seiya Suzuki crushed a home run into the 5th deck of the Vantelin Dome ? pic.twitter.com/JSKi5G2KsU
— Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) February 28, 2026 I also keep reminding people how much of a different hitter Nico Hoerner was for MOST of last season. After June 24, he slashed .306/.359/.430 (123 wRC+). If he stays THAT good, you don’t want him too low in the lineup, either. I just remember last year often being grateful that he was coming up in key moments late in the game for that one extra at-bat afforded to the guys who bat at the very top. Kevin Alcantara will get into today’s game at DH.Kevin Alcántara is set DH in tomorrow's game, Craig Counsell said. His schedule has been a little slow bc of offseason hernia surgery, but Counsell stressed that there's still plenty of time left in spring."You'll see him regularly but we're just going to be a little cautious."
