80s Rock Superstar Eyes Long-Awaited Honor in 50th Anniversary Year

Billy Idol hopes to have two reasons to celebrate in 2026. The music icon, who was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second year in a row, told Billboard the nod is even more meaningful this time around.

“It’s really exciting,” Idol, 70, said in February 2026. “It would be incredible this year. This is 50 years ago when I started (with the band Generation X), so it would be really incredible.”

“It would cap off an amazing 50 years,” the rocker added. “When I walked through that door, that punk rock opened up, you really didn’t know if you’ve got the goods; only over time, you see, I really did have the goods, and I think the songs I’ve made are lasting, the recordings are still good. And I had great people around me to get to where I wanted to go.”

Idol formed the punk rock band Generation X in London in 1976. The band released the albums Generation X (1978), Valley Of The Dolls (’79), and Kiss Me Deadly (’81), the latter of which featured an early version of Idol’s later solo hit “Dancing With Myself.” As a solo artist, Idol found massive fame with the ‘80s hits “White  Wedding,” “Rebel Yell,” and "Eyes Without a Face,” which were all fueled by the rise of MTV.

Speaking with Billboard, Idol noted that it is “unusual” to be inducted into the Rock Hall upon the first nomination. “It’s a process, and I can see why,” he added. “There’s quite a large number of people involved in deciding who gets in. It’s no guarantee.”

In addition to Idol, nominees for the class of 2026 for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame include Phil Collins, Mariah Carey, Iron Maiden, and 13 more.

When he was originally nominated for the honor last February, Idol told Ultimate Classic Rock that he was "knocked out" to receive his first nomination.

"It's a great honor," he said at the time. "If I do get to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, you really get a chance to thank your fans. That's what I like about it. You know, you get a chance to really thank everybody who supported you through thick and thin. So that's an incredible honor."
