AZUSA – Trabuco Hills’ boys basketball team would rally, but it just couldn’t keep the momentum going to truly threaten Colony’s lead Friday night in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship game.
The Mustangs lost to Colony, 51-44, at Azusa Pacific University.
“We couldn’t get it under six points,” said Trabuco Hills coach Sean Sullens. “That magic number of six.”
Trabuco Hills (20-13) gave up a great many offensive rebounds to Colony (20-12). The Titans had 18 offensive rebounds to the Mustangs’ eight.
Senior guard Devon Williams led Trabuco Hills with 13 points. He was the only Mustangs player who scored in double figures.
Trabuco Hills senior guard Ryan Hull, who was averaging 15 points a game and scored 36 points in a triple-overtime win over Blair in the quarterfinals, was limited to seven points.
Colony senior Fende Thomas scored 13 points with 11 rebounds. Deshawn Deloach scored 11 points with five offensive rebounds for the Titans. Colony Dayvon Lewis had six offensive rebounds.
It wasn’t that Colony was a big team – the 6-foot-3 Thomas was the Titans’ tallest starter. The Titans were the aggressor when the teams went to battle on the boards.
Trabuco Hills’ 5-0 lead to start the game evaporated quickly. Colony outscored the Mustangs 13-2 from there to establish a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
When Thomas scored on an inside move the basket put Colony up 20-8.
The Mustangs twice got their deficit down to six points in the fourth quarter, including 46-40 with two free throws by Isaiah De Lorez with 3:17 to go. And then again with a 3-pointer by Williams with 1:37 to go.
Thomas responded by scoring on after an offensive rebound to make it 50-42.
Hull said Colony was among the better teams Trabuco Hills played this season.
“In the top five, for sure,” Hull said.
The season continues for both teams next week in the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs that begin Tuesday. The regional brackets will be released Sunday.
