The 82-year-old comedian attended the 40th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Thursday, February 26 for a screening of the CNN documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.
While posing on the red carpet, Chase was photographed, per Page Six, gently holding Jayni’s face before leaning in for a kiss. Jayni, 68, leaned into her husband and placed her hand on his arm during the sweet moment. Other photos from the night show Chase sweetly kissing her hand and putting his arm around her multiple times.
Chase arrived at the event in a wheelchair but later moved around without it once inside. His manager previously explained that the National Lampoon’s Vacation star primarily uses the wheelchair when extensive travel is required.
The documentary itself offers a candid look at Chase’s health struggles, including a serious heart issue in 2021. Jayni recalls, “Something was wrong, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the ER. His heart stops.” She added that during a difficult period, “When the heart muscles get weaker, they can’t pump as much blood out with each beat.” Doctors ultimately placed Chase “into a coma for maybe eight days,” according to longtime friend Peter Aaron. The actor later confirmed he’s “fine now” after spending five weeks hospitalized.
While Thursday night’s affectionate red carpet moment highlighted the strength of Chevy and Jayni’s relationship, the documentary also offered a look into relationships that predated his 40-year marriage.
In the doc, the comedian reflects on his college romance with actress Blythe Danner, a chapter of his life that many fans may not have known about. “Blythe Danner, that was my first real love. She’s a great woman, and I’ll always think highly of her,” Chase admits in the film. The two met while students at Bard College in the mid-1960s, where they bonded over music and performed in jazz bands together.
Their paths eventually diverged, with Danner’s acting career accelerating quicker. She went on to marry Bruce Paltrow, with their marriage lasting from 1969 up until Paltrow’s death in 2002.
