Micky Dolenz is honoring the legacy of Neil Sedaka following the legendary singer-songwriter’s death at age 86.
Dolenz shared a heartfelt tribute on social media alongside a photo of Sedaka, reflecting on both his immense solo success and his lesser-known contributions to The Monkees’catalog, particularly his connection to the late Davy Jones, who died 14 years ago almost the day, February 29, 2012.
“I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Neil Sedaka,” Dolenz wrote.

“Neil was one of those rare songwriters who could do it all. He gave the world so many great hits of his own, and Monkees fans will know his work, too — he co-wrote ‘When Love Comes Knocking at Your Door’ with Carole Bayer Sager, along with a few other songs that found their way into our world. He also wrote ‘Rainy Jane’ for Davy’s solo record.”
Dolenz also recalled a deeply personal moment.
“I'll never forget when he showed up all the way from the East Coast to pay tribute to Davy at his LA-based memorial with a performance of ‘Love Comes Knocking at Your Door,'" wrote Dolenz. "Sending my thoughts to his family, friends, and everyone who loved his music.”
Sedaka, who rose to fame in the early 1960s with No. 1 hits including “Oh! Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” later experienced a major resurgence in the 1970s with songs like “Laughter in the Rain” and “Bad Blood.”

While best known for his own chart-topping recordings, Sedaka also made quiet but meaningful contributions to the extended Monkees universe. His songwriting collaboration with Bayer Sager connected him directly to the band’s musical legacy, and his tribute performance at Davy Jones’ memorial left a lasting impression.
Following news of Sedaka’s death, fans flooded Dolenz’s post with tributes of their own.
“He blessed this world with beauty…his legacy is assured,” one person wrote.
“He was so amazing. Fly high, Neil ?️,” another added.

“Lucky to have seen him perform live with my mom ? a lovely memory.”
“God Bless Neil Sedaka forever, always.”
The cause of Sedaka’s death has been reported elsewhere, and tributes continue to pour in from across the music world.
For Dolenz, however, the loss is personal—another chapter closing in a generation of songwriters who helped define an era.
