Ben Johnson Earns His Most Important “A” After First Season As Bears Head Coach

Ben Johnson’s first season as the Chicago Bears head coach was about as successful as anyone could have imagined.

When he was first hired, while most of us were excited about what the future held, the vast majority of us came into 2025 with tempered expectations, putting a ceiling around 10 wins, and a successful one pretty much just entailing Caleb Williams showing tha the was the QB of the future.

What we got instead was the most pleasant surprise we could have expected.

Caleb Williams took off and established himself not only as the Bears’ franchise quarterback but also as one of the game’s most clutch performers. As for the team, they won 11 regular-season games, captured the NFC North for the first time since 2018, beat the Packers twice, won a playoff game, and were one miscommunication against the Rams away from an NFC Championship bid.

In one year, the Chicago Bears went from one of the league’s laughingstocks to a top contender for the foreseeable future in the NFC.

So, naturally, just about anyone would have given Ben Johnson’s performance this season an “A” grade. It turns out that, according to the NFLPA’s player report cards, the Bears’ roster agrees.

Ben Johnson Earns “A” Grade From Bears Players

Every season, the NFLPA issues player report cards from each team. These surveys are issued to the players in early November and grade everything from the team ownership down to nutrition, facilities, and family treatment.

This season, the Bears passed these surveys with flying colors. Here were all of their grades:

Treatment of Families: C+ Home Game Field: C Food/Dining Area: B Nutritionist/Dietician: A Locker Room: B+ Training Room: B Training Staff: B Weight Room: A Strength Coaches: A- Position Coaches: B- Offensive Coordinator: A- Defensive Coordinator: C+ Special Teams Coordinator: B- Team Travel: B+ Head Coach: A General Manager: A- Team Ownership: A- Overall Rank: 13

Chicago’s football organization received seven “A” or “A-minus” grades, and their lowest grade was a “C”, which was for their Home Game Field. Good thing a new stadium is coming any minute now, right?! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

But seriously, it’s awesome to see the organization earn high marks from the players. Because truly, that’s what matters. We can get mad about stadium news or ownership decisions, but in the end, what really matters is if the players in the organization are happy, and the franchise is perceived as a good one around the league. Because ultimately, that’s what can lead to winning football.

The Bears nailed their head coaching hire. The Bears have their quarterback. And their players see the organization as a good one to play for. Those three things should ultimately lead to success on the field, as they did last year.

So sure, we can get annoyed by off-field things like stadium sites, but what really matters is that the Bears are positioned to win now, and for the foreseeable future. And if they’re winning for the foreseeable future, they can play at Gately Stadium for all I care. Like Al Davis said, “Just win, baby.” And for the first time in a long time, it feels like the Bears are built to win for the long-term.
