Taking to the mic, the Canadian-born actor gave a five-minute speech … entirely in French. During the speech, the Dumb and Dumber actor got emotional while mentioning his family, namely his girlfriend, grandson, and daughter, who attended the show with Carrey, and late father, Percy Carrey.

Frequent collaborator Michel Gondry, who directed the Carrey and Kate Winslet vehicle, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, introduced Carrey, who follows Julia Roberts as the awards' international recipient. According to Film Enthusiast, the Honorary César Award is one of France’s highest film honors, “celebrating Carrey’s decades-long impact on comedy and film.”

Following the honor, Carrey spoke with reporters.
"It was a pretty big challenge trying to do my speech in French,” he told them. “I wrote it, and I researched it, and I practiced it like crazy," he said, adding “I watched everybody talking a thousand miles an hour up there, accepting their awards, and I was like, 'I’m dead.' I made mistakes and I was, like, a novice, but I felt a lot of love. And I felt a lot of appreciation that i tried."
