Sources told Deadline on Thursday that Universal's upcoming romantic comedy titled The Catch will star Emma Stone and Chris Pine. The film will be directed by Dave McGary, Stone's husband, and the script was written by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin. Producers credited include Stone, McCary, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Michael H. Weber and Ali Herting.
As of now, plot details remain unknown, and the project is still in the very early stages of pre-production. If a deal does close, this would likely be the next film the La La Land actress shoots. Stone's most recent movie with director Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia, has been a success and earned four nominations at the 98th Academy Awards. Meanwhile, Pine recently starred in and produced the romantic drama Carousel, which was released last month.
Several high-profile actors were eyeing the opposite role once it got around that Stone would be working on it. The role ended up going to Pine, who landed it after many meetings with executive producers. This will be the first time the two actors will be working together.

Stone grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and started acting in local theater productions before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a professional career. She made her TV debut in the reality show In Search of the New Partridge Family when she was a teenager, then appeared in many comedy films throughout the late 2000s, such as Superbad and Easy A. In 2011, she starred in the rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Help, before gaining wider recognition as Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb's Spider-Man films alongside Andrew Garfield.
In the mid 2010s, Stone started playing more serious roles, including Sam Thomson, a recovering drug addict in Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which earned her first Oscar nomination in 2014, and Abigail Hill in the period film The Favourite. She has two Academy Awards for Best Actress, thanks to her roles in La La Land (2016) and Poor Things (2023), and is nominated for a third for Bugonia.
