Just because they wrote about love and dating didn’t mean they had it all figured out. Sex and the City writer Jenny Bicks recently revealed that she and her fellow writers were constantly asked for real-life relationship advice simply because they worked on the iconic series — despite not considering themselves experts.
The requests became so frequent, in fact, that they ultimately inspired the Season 3 episode “Frenemies.” In the episode, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) hosts a “How to Find Love” seminar called Bright Lights, Date City, which quickly turns into a fiasco when she realizes she has no concrete advice to give.
"We would talk a lot in the room about how, and I'm sure this happened for you too, that when you write or appear on a show like Sex and the City, people assume that you know a lot about relationships. So people would come to us as writers and be like, what do I do about this?" Bicks shared with Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte York Goldenblatt on Sex and the City, during an appearance on Davis’ Are You a Charlotte? podcast.
“And we're like, do you understand we're writing about the situations we're in. Like, we were all definitely single; none of us could keep a relationship going. So the idea that people saw us as experts was hilarious to us. And so we wanted to take that and really literally put it up on stage,” she recalled.
As a result, the Learning Annex storyline was born, inspired by the slew of questions writers would often get. “I don't think any one of us were asked specifically to do a Learning Annex about being single, but occasionally we would do panels and things like that," Bicks recalled. "We would get these questions, and we were like, we don't know...that's why we write about it!"
The entire Sex and the City series is currently streaming on Max and Netflix.
