Parton has always shown a dedication to children, starting with her Imagination Library. In 2018, she explained to NPR that she began the program because her "dad did not get a chance to go to school. And daddy couldn't read and write, and it was kind of crippling to him."
In the 30 years since she began the program in Sevier County, Tenn., it's expanded beyond the state's borders. Now, millions of children in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland also receive the free books.
"I think that if you can read, it gives you wings to fly," Dolly said. "Through books, you can see how other people live and what other things there are in the world and all the things that you might become."
