No. 17 Alabama men’s basketball torched the Mississippi State Bulldogs 100-75 on Wednesday night in Coleman Coliseum, thanks to a sublime first-half scoring effort.
The Crimson Tide knocked down 22 attempts from 3-point range, which tied the highest total it has hit this season. Sixteen of the 22 made triples came in the opening 20 minutes of action. The impressive effort was the team’s eighth of 100 points or more this season and came in the absence of star guard Labaron Philon Jr.
Head coach Nate Oats said he thought the team’s first-half offensive barrage was “the best basketball” the team has played all year.
Forward Amari Allen led all scorers with 23 points on 8/10 shooting. Four other Crimson Tide players scored double figures, including guards Aden Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who combined for 34 points. Holloway also notched a double-double, tying his career-high with 10 assists.
“He’s had the green light all year,” Oats said of Allen.
Alabama opened the game with a sufficient 5/10 from beyond the arc. Allen knocked down two triples, grabbed two rebounds and dished out an assist. The hot shooting continued as the Crimson Tide led 24-12 with 11:13 remaining in the opening half, as it shot 8/16 from the field.
Allen continued his stellar start to the game with five made 3-pointers and 16 points at the break. Alabama reached 13 made triples with 5:26 to play in the opening period.
The made triples kept falling as the half reached its end, as three more hit bottom, raising the Crimson Tide’s tally to 16, its most in a half this season. Alabama ended the half with 63 points — its highest total in the first half this season — and carried a 30-point cushion over the Bulldogs into the locker room.
Alabama picked up where it left off to open the second half, knocking down 4/5 from deep in the opening four minutes. Guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. led the Crimson Tide early on with two made triples.
The stellar shooting did not last, though.
Alabama missed seven of its last eight shots after a made dunk from center Aiden Sherrell at the 13:09 mark. The lull continued until forward Taylor Bol Bowen scored buckets on consecutive possessions, which pushed the Crimson Tide’s lead to 23 points with 4:19 to play.
Oats said that he was happy with Bol Bowen’s effort and defense.
A made triple from guard Houston Mallette with 2:39 left extended the advantage back to 30 points, but a 7-2 run to end the game from the Bulldogs led to a 25-point victory for the Crimson Tide, which moved to 21-7 on the year.
Alabama will return to the hardwood on Saturday in Knoxville, Tennessee, taking on the No. 22 Tennessee Volunteers. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on ESPN.
