Yorba Linda football coach Jeff Bailey has resigned after 16 seasons and accepted a head coaching position at Beverly Hills, he said Wednesday.
Bailey, who guided Yorba Linda to two CIF-SS championships, resigned on Wednesday morning and met with the Mustangs’ players in the afternoon.
On Tuesday night, the Beverly Hills Unified School District board approved Bailey’s hire, the coach confirmed.
In the latest, high-profile coaching change this offseason, Bailey departs from a program that he built into one of the Orange County’s best for a school that didn’t win a game last season.
Bailey will also serve as a director of strength and conditioning at Beverly Hills.
Bailey has shown that he knows how to build a program. As Yorba Linda’s founding coach, he quickly guided the Mustangs to success.
In his second season, Yorba Linda won a share of the Empire League title in 2011. The school went on to capture several league titles and CIF championships in Division 8 and Division 3 in 2016 and 2022, respectively.
For the 2022 season, Bailey was The Register’s O.C. coach of the year.
This past season, Yorba Linda finished 9-2, captured the Bravo League title and fell to Los Alamitos 35-28 in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.
Yorba Linda lost in league to San Juan Hills 41-17 but the Stallions later forfeited the game after an investigation into transfers.
Bailey arrived at Yorba Linda early in 2009 after rebuilding El Dorado’s football program.
Bailey took the coaching reins at El Dorado in 2004, two seasons after the Golden Hawks finished 1-9.
Under Bailey’s leadership, El Dorado captured consecutive CIF-SS championships in the Southwest Division in 2006 and 2007.
The signature of Bailey’s teams at Yorba Linda and El Dorado were physical ground attacks, strong line play and discipline.
A former offensive lineman at UCLA and Fullerton High, Bailey was considered one of the top linemen coaches in Orange County.
Bailey will work with some familiar people at Beverly Hills.
Athletic director Steve Lawson is the former wrestling coach and a lower-level football coach at El Dorado for Bailey.
Beverly Hills Unified superintendent Alex Cherniss is the former superintendent at Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified.
Beverly Hills principal Loan Sriruksa is the former principal at Esperanza. Bailey served as an assistant coach at Esperanza under late Hall of Fame coach Gary Meek, one of his chief mentors.
Bailey leaves Yorba Linda as the program prepares to play the next two seasons in the Alpha League, the top grouping in the Orange County Football Conference.
The leagues in the conference are configured by teams’ power ratings by HSratings.com.
Last season, Yorba Linda finished with a power rating of 36.3. Beverly Hills’ rating was -74.7 after it finished 0-9 under former coach Hasan Muhammad.
Yorba Linda’s nonleague schedule this season also includes a game against Long Beach Poly,
Bailey’s top assistant coach has been John Domen, who teaches history at the school.
The football offseason has introduced new coaches at several schools, including JSerra (Hardy Nickerson) and Servite (Rick Garretson). Orange Lutheran is seeking to fulfill its coaching vacancy.
