Four people in a US-registered speed boat have been killed after being shot by officers in Cuban waters, the country’s government said on Wednesday.
Cuba’s interior ministry said in a statement that the Florida-based boat was roughly 1 mile (1.6km) northeast of Cayo Falcones, off Cuba’s north coast.
Officials said one Cuban officer was injured, four suspects killed and six others injured.
The wounded were evacuated and are receiving medical attention, with the interior ministry saying that the matter was under investigation.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said he was ordering prosecutors to open a separate investigation in conjunction with other state and federal law enforcement partners, claiming the Cuban account could not be trusted.
The Cuban interior ministry said the boat was approached by five members of a Cuban border patrol unit after it entered the country’s waters. The speedboat then opened fire, wounding the commander of the Cuban vessel, the statement said.
In the statement, the ministry said Cuba’s government was “safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region”.
It was unclear if any US citizens were aboard the boat and it was not immediately known what the vessel and its occupants were doing in Cuban waters.
None of the dead or wounded aboard the encroaching vessel were identified, but Cuba said it was registered in Florida.
The highly unusual incident took place after the United States blocked virtually all oil shipments to the island, increasing pressure on the Communist-run government.
