The Fountain of Youth: Groundbreaking study at UofR investigates if HIV drug could extend healthy aging

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An upcoming multi-million dollar study at the University of Rochester aims to explore whether an HIV drug can slow aging and combat diseases like dementia and diabetes.

Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean spoke with Dr. Vera Gorbunova, the study’s lead researcher.

Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean: “Are you looking for the fountain of youth?”Dr. Vera Gorbunova, UofR: “Well we don’t expect to achieve immortality through that.”

Dr. Gorbunova isn’t chasing science fiction; she’s focused on improving health span. While the maximum life span is 120 years, she hopes to help people live closer to that age in good health.

Dr. Vera Gorbunova, UofR: “So if we could make people live a little bit closer to that and in good health, so that is what the fountain of youth for me is right now.”

The science behind the study involves reducing cell inflammation, which can lead to mobility issues, dementia, and diabetes. Dr. Gorbunova and her research partner, who is also her husband, will test an HIV drug to see if it can keep older individuals healthy.

Brean attended a Medicare seminar at Lifespan to gauge interest in such a drug.

Brean: “If there was a pill like that, would you take it?”Tom Folan, Lifespan Medicare seminar: “Absolutely. I have a hip I had to have replaced. So if there’s any way to reduce the pain and allow me to keep exercising and running, I think that would be a huge benefit.”

Beth Peters, another seminar attendee, shared her thoughts: “Now that I’m older, it’s like reoccurring stuff keeps coming back so that makes me wonder, oh! Would that be something that would help me?”

Brean asked Dr. Gorbunova about the value of extending healthy lives.

Dr. Vera Gorbunova, UofR: “To lower human suffering because aging and all the conditions that come with it brings a lot of misery and suffering to people while healthy aging is a blessing.”

The study also addresses economic concerns, as there are not enough young people to care for the elderly.

Dr. Vera Gorbunova, UofR: “So what’s the solution? Make older people healthy so they can take care of themselves.”

The trial will involve 200 healthy participants aged 60 to 65 and is expected to begin in about a year and a half.
