Lucid slashes hundreds of East Bay jobs as electric car maker fights red ink

NEWARK — Lucid Group will slash hundreds of Bay Area jobs, a downsizing ushered in by billions of dollars in red ink that has stained the electric vehicle maker’s balance sheet.

Slated to occur on April 21, the company will eliminate 319 positions at its headquarters in Newark, Lucid reported to the state Employment Development Department in a WARN notice.

“Changing business needs require us to reduce our workforce at the Newark facilities permanently,” Russell Jones, a Lucid associate general counsel, stated in a WARN letter.

During the 12 months that ended in September 2025, Lucid Group lost $3.14 billion on revenue of $1.07 billion, according to the Finance Charts website.

April’s cuts come after a decision by Lucid to eliminate 12% of its workforce worldwide, as reported initially by TechCrunch.

Lucid previously eliminated 258 jobs in 2024 and 123 in 2023 in Newark, the company told the state EDD

None of the affected workers in the most recent layoffs have bumping rights that enable them to displace Lucid employees with less seniority. None are represented by a labor union.
