O’Dowd digs deep to advance
Bishop O’Dowd’s Naas Griffin and Liberty’s Jaiden Miller put on an electrifying show in their Division I semifinal.
Miller ultimately won the individual matchup, outscoring Griffin 38-34, but the O’Dowd star captured the night’s bigger prize.
He and his teammates will play for a championship this weekend after they found another gear in the fourth quarter to pull for an 80-73 victory on their home court in Oakland.
O’Dowd will meet Granada in the final at a date, site and time that has not been announced.
If that one’s anything like the semifinals, buckle up.
O’Dowd and Liberty were tied 40-40 at halftime and 54-54 through three quarters.
In the final period, O’Dowd found another level, or more specifically Kaiden Gibbs found one. The senior scored 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to successfully navigate the Dragons to the finish line.
O’Dowd also got 17 points from GJ Hill-Thomas, eight in the fourth period, as the Dragons kept alive their hopes for the program’s 20th NCS championship.

Cornerstone Christian advances to D3 final
For the 12th straight game, Cornerstone Christian has emerged victorious.
The small Antioch school will be competing for a Division III title after dominating College Park at Heritage High 81-64. The Cougars will play top-seeded Branson at College of Marin on Friday.
“This was the ultimate goal ever since I became the coach at Cornerstone,” coach Michael Thomasson said.
Cornerstone won a NCS Division VI title two years ago and became a small-school powerhouse last season, reaching the Division III playoffs.
The Cougars have exceeded expectations this season, beating teams like Heritage, Brave Christian, Edison-Stockton and San Ramon Valley en route to a perfect 12-0 record in the Bay Counties League East Division.
Friday’s game against Branson will be a rematch of a game played at the Damien Classic in late December. Branson won that game 49-46, but Thomasson said Cornerstone is a much different team now.
“We weren’t as connected then as we are now and we just didn’t have that experience down the stretch, and we played them close,” Thomasson said. “I feel it’s going to be a different result this time, but kids have to go out there and play, and they have to execute. I think it’s going to be a different outcome this time, but I look forward to the game. This is what the kids have trained and worked so hard for. So, we’re looking forward to Friday.”

Brave Christian falls to Branson
The West Dublin school was no match for Branson’s high-powered offense, falling on the road 70-52.
Branson star NJ Gray scored a game-high 20 points and senior Tyler Wells had 18. Brave Christian got 17 points from JP Oka and 13 from Adama Kone.
The Lions will have one more shot to make the NorCal playoffs, needing to beat College Park in Friday’s third-place game. Branson will face Cornerstone Christian in the Division III title game at College of Marin on Friday.

Cooper leads Heritage to D1 final
Heritage’s Jessie Cooper had herself a game in a Division I semifinal at home against 11th-seeded Pinole Valley.
She led her team in scoring and, just as importantly, she gobbled up rebounds.
The contributions added up to a ticket to Friday’s championship game against top-seeded Redwood at Cardinal Newman.
Heritage, seeded seventh, beat Pinole Valley 56-44 behind Cooper’s 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The home team also got 14 points from Riley Bayot, including four 3-pointers, and 13 from Ogechi Nwosu.
Heritage’s road to the final included a first-round win over 10th-seeded Windsor and an upset of second-seeded Dublin in the quarterfinals Friday.
Redwood reached the title game with a 47-46 victory over fourth-seeded Acalanes on Tuesday.
