Q: Is there enough space for an additional driving lane to be added between the center divider and the carpool lane on the 210 Freeway from La Verne to San Bernardino? Al Marquez of Rancho Cucamonga believes there is. He wrote recently asking for an update, after he previously asked about the issue.
“In January of 2020, this same question was presented in your column, and it received a response from Tim Watkins, chief of the San Bernardino’s County Transportation Authority’s Office of Legislative and Public Affairs. He stated that studies projected the traffic demand on this highway over a period of 20-25 years, and that the aforementioned stretch of the 210 was about 15 years old at the time and still within that initial studied time period. We are now up to that 20-plus year mark. There is little doubt the additional lane will eventually be added, but unfortunately, will probably arrive as a FasTrak lane,” Marquez said.
A: After Marquez’s first inquiry, On the Road reported there were no plans at the time to add a lane or restripe the 210 between La Verne and San Bernardino.
We ran this new inquiry by Watkins again, to see if anything has changed.
“SBCTA’s responsibility is to plan for the long-term transportation needs of San Bernardino County as a whole, balancing congestion management, goods movement, safety and access to jobs and services across a growing region,” Watkins said.
They are aware of increasing congestion on the 210, he said, however, it “is part of the State Highway System and must align with state transportation and climate policies, which significantly limit the addition of new general-purpose freeway capacity. Even express lanes that allow for performance management and trip time reliability are becoming increasingly more difficult.”
All that being said, there are no current plans or funded projects to add lanes to the 210 in San Bernardino County. The current Measure I half-cent sales tax program includes adding express lanes on the 10 and 15 freeways, but not on the 210, Watkins said. Adding express lanes on the 210 would depend on extending the sales tax beyond 2040, he said, which is the sunset date of the current Measure I.
‘Teachable moment’
Maria Alvarado of Riverside offered an idea for Caltrans and possibly cities, too, to add what she called a “teachable moment” to their movable displays or freeway overpass digital information signs. These signs currently provide traffic information about things like lane closures, the distance to the next freeway, remembering to wear a seat belt, and the like.
