No. 25 women’s basketball weathers cold stretch in third, finishes strong in 76-71 win over Florida

Coming off three straight tough losses, No. 25 Alabama women’s basketball picked up a much-needed win over the Florida Gators on Sunday, 76-71.

Head coach Kristy Curry called the victory a “gutsy and gritty road win,” praising her team’s ability to perform in the late stages of the game. The Crimson Tide trailed 68-66 with 3:25 to go before closing the game on an 8-3 run.

Alabama, which normally sports offense with contributions evenly spread out among key players, also saw a shift in its scoring profile. One would think a game with such concentrated scoring — only two players scored double digits and only three scored above 5 points — would be a recipe for defeat, but on Sunday, that notion would’ve been incorrect. Guards Jessica Timmons and Ta’Mia Scott combined for 55 of Alabama’s 76 with 34 and 21, respectively. This is Timmons’ new career high and Scott’s fourth straight game scoring 10 or more.

Even with the intense clutch-time situation, which Alabama has been accustomed to due three single-digit games since the start of February, this game was different in another way. It was a game of significant runs rather than a constantly close-knit battle.

Alabama started strong, winning the first quarter by 5 and taking a 31-19 lead with six minutes to go in the second. The Gators then flipped the script with a 13-4 run that brought the game within 3, and minutes later, they went into the half down 38-32.

To start the third quarter, Florida cut it to 1 at 41-40, but the Crimson Tide once again put together defensive stops and quality shotmaking to take a 51-44 lead with under 5 minutes. Then came the biggest run of the game, which would’ve been talked about as the turning point had Alabama lost. In the last 4 1/2 minutes of the third, the Gators flipped the score from being down 7 to leading 58-54.

With 9:27 to go in the fourth, Scott made a 3 that was the Crimson Tide’s first field goal since midway through the third, nearly six minutes of game time and more than 10 minutes of real time.

The story of the final period was the Crimson Tide’s defense mitigating the effects of its offensive struggles. Alabama went ice cold to end the third and only had 9 points to show for seven minutes of gameplay with 3:25 to go, but the defensive effort prevented Florida from ever pulling away. The 8-3 Alabama run to end the game cemented the fourth quarter as the Gators’ lowest-scoring of the game, only 13 points.

“We embraced hard and stuck with our gameplan principles down the stretch on both sides of the ball,” Curry said. “I thought Karly [Weathers] and Jess’s leadership was relentless and fueled belief late in the game in a tough environment.”

Weathers finished the game with only 4 points, but she tied for the team high with six rebounds and was far and away the assist leader with nine. Her and her teammates’ ability to affect other areas of the game ultimately helped her squad come away with the tough victory.

Alabama continues on the road with its penultimate regular-season game on Thursday. The team will face the No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, tipping at 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
