PEORIA, Ariz. — For 29 other teams, a $240 million free agent addition would probably be the center of attention in spring camp. With the Dodgers, Kyle Tucker just blends into the background behind the assortment of international stars, former MVPs and multi-millionaires.
“I mean, every organization is unique in its own sense,” said Tucker on his third organization in three years, having gone from the Houston Astros to the Chicago Cubs by trade and then to the Dodgers on a four-year, $240 million free-agent contract. “This organization, obviously, the last couple of years has done pretty well. So I think that’s a huge part of the front office, and them doing their part and trying to get a great group together, just great people and great athletes, and then try and just put the best product out on field for the city of Los Angeles and the fans. So I think they’ve done a pretty good job of that so far.
“I try and go out and play my game, regardless of the situation. So I just try and do my part here and do the same that I’ve done every other year.”
Tucker made his un-ballyhooed spring debut with the Dodgers Sunday against the San Diego Padres, grounding out and drawing a walk in his two plate appearances.
“Well, last year, I got one hit in spring, so hopefully I get more than that,” Tucker joked. “So that’s the goal.”
The low-key Tucker comes as advertised. During his free agency, there were even murmurings about his lack of passion for baseball. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman acknowledged the criticism was loud enough for the Dodgers to dig into it before signing him. They found it “unfair” and Friedman called Tucker just “a lower-motor guy.”
“For me and the people I talked to about how he goes about it, there’s nothing negative for me,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I love guys who just come to work and value playing and love playing and competing. He just wants to win. He’s not a self-promoter. He’s not going to give you guys a lot of great sound bites. He wants to play to win. I love guys like that.”
Will Smith – far from the league lead in sound bites himself – said Tucker is “just a really good player and he’s going to help us win a championship” with no need for the hype that usually comes with a big free agent signing.
“Yeah, there might be other superstars on this team. Shohei is even making more money than him. So it’s not really anyone’s focus here,” Smith said. “It’s all about getting in every day, working hard, helping us win a ballgame that day, and just working towards that ultimate goal of winning a World Series.”
