The four pinch points as Trump issues warning to Iran

Iran’s counterproposal for its nuclear programme should be ready within days, officials have said, as Donald Trump warns of targeted strikes and even regime change in Tehran.

Iran’s foreign minister said on Friday that a draft counterproposal could be ready within two to three days for top Iranian officials to review.

It comes after nuclear talks with the United States earlier this week to resolve the longstanding dispute with Iran over its nuclear programme, and the recent US military buildup in the Middle East.

US military planning on Iran has reportedly reached an advanced stage, with options including strikes or regime change.

As tensions continue to build, here are the four key pinch points which could spell trouble for the region.

    Iran’s nuclear counterproposal

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, said following indirect Geneva talks with US representatives that Tehran is preparing a draft counterproposal for top officials to review within days.

Araqchi said in an interview with US cable news network MS Now on Friday he hoped an agreement could be reached “in a very short period of time”, with more US-Iran talks possible in a week or so.

On Thursday, Trump gave Tehran a 10–15 day deadline to resolve the nuclear dispute, warning of “really bad things” if negotiations fail.

Araqchi did not give a specific timeline for when Iran would show the counterproposal to US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, but said he believed a diplomatic deal could be achieved.

    Trump considers targeted strikes

Trump warned that he is considering targeted strikes on individuals as pressure builds over Iran’s nuclear counterproposal.

Asked about limited strikes on Friday, Trump said: “I guess I can say I am considering it,” adding that Iran must negotiate a “fair deal.”

US military planning has reached an advanced stage, with options including targeting individuals as part of an attack and even pursuing leadership change in Tehran if ordered by Trump, Reuters reported, citing two US officials.

Araqchi warned that military action would complicate efforts to reach a deal.

It comes as images show the USS Gerald R Ford travelling east through the Strait of Gibraltar as the US military build-up in the Middle East continues. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is the world’s largest warship and the most advanced in the US Navy.

Last week, Trump said the USS Gerald R Ford relocate “very soon” from the Caribbean to the Middle East, joining the USS Abraham Lincoln which was sent in January.

Trump could order Iran regime change

Trump has previously endorsed leadership change in Iran, with reports it is now one of the options officials are considering.

Last week, the US President said regime change in Iran is “the best thing that could happen”. He would not specify who he wanted to lead Iran instead of Islamic ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but noted “there are people” who could take over.

Now, it is understood that regime change is one of the options the US is considering, if ordered by Trump.

In January, US military forces toppled the Venezuelan regime, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.

Trump also threatened to seize Greenland from Denmark, refusing for a time to rule out doing so by force but later backing down.

Two weeks to resolve nuclear dispute

The Geneva discussions between Iran and the US reportedly produced agreement on broad “guiding principles,” though no formal deal has been reached.

Araqchi said both sides are exploring measures to ensure Iran’s nuclear programme remains peaceful while sanctions are addressed.

Trump also cited Tehran’s recent crackdown on protests, claiming that threats of US action had led the leadership to halt planned mass executions.

HRANA, a US-based monitoring group, has verified more than 7,000 deaths, with another 11,700 under review.

At the United Nations, officials called for continued diplomacy, warning that heightened rhetoric and military activity could escalate tensions in the region.
