The UK has had an extremely rainy winter. Data from Copernicus, the European Commission’s flagship Earth observation programme, shows that several parts of the UK had more than 200mm of rain in the weeks to 10 February, while large areas of Portugal and Spain had between 400 and 500mm.

With much of Europe still wet or chilly, better weather might seem a distant dream. However, blue skies are just a short journey away.

Over the next couple of months, says Professor Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, “seasonal models suggest high pressure is more likely to influence southeastern Europe – including Greece, Cyprus and coastal Turkey – as well as the far North Atlantic and at times northern Scandinavia, increasing the chances of drier, more settled spells.” Western and Central Europe appear more exposed to changeable weather, she adds.

While long-range forecasts can be changeable and uncertain, here are six destinations that offer a very good chance of respite from the rain and cold. Best of all, they’re within easy reach.

    Cabo de Gata, Andalucia

Almeria may have taken a battering from the elements this winter, but this part of southern Spain is widely considered to be the driest place in mainland Europe – and one pocket has managed to avoid much of the rainfall seen elsewhere in the region.

The protected Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is home to a dramatic landscape of calderas, mesas and cliffs, carved out millions of years ago by now-extinct volcanoes.

There are trails ripe for hiking, biking and horse riding, sandy coves to be discovered on foot or by kayak and, just beyond the Natural Park, the nearby Tabernas Desert. Here, you can climb up to Tabernas Castle, 11th-century Arabic ruin, for sweeping views of the landscapes where directors including Sergio Leone filmed countless Spaghetti Westerns.

Since the beginning of the month, Cabo de Gata has seen less than 6mm of rain – less than 1mm in the past week – and although March is typically one of the area’s wetter periods, long-range forecasts predict just two days of rain next month, with average high temperatures of 15°C.

Fly to Almeria with easyJet (returns from Bristol around £42 in March) and check in to one of the Cabo’s low-key farmhouse hotels, such as the whitewashed Cortijo El Campillo, which offers doubles from €350 for a five-night stay.

    Marrakech and the Ourika Valley

Late winter and early spring are perfect for exploring Marrakech and enjoying its dry climate without wilting in the summer heat. Rain showers tend to be brief and light, and next month, they’re only predicted on three days. For the rest of March, you can expect eight hours of daily sunshine and average temperature highs of 24°C.

Wander the winding lanes of the Medina and hop between souk stalls selling everything from spices and argan oil to handicrafts and homewares, before taking in the intricate Islamic architecture of landmarks including Madrasa Ben Youssef and Koutoubia Mosque.

Make the most of the weather at the colourful Jardins Majorelle, a lush botanical garden created by French artist Jacques Majorelle, dotted with Art Deco buildings painted in bold hues. The most famous of these, Villa Oasis, was home to Yves Saint Laurent, and the neighbouring museum is devoted to the fashion designer’s life and work.

The Atlas Mountains are also within easy reach, offering the chance to hike in dramatic scenery – including Morocco’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal – and explore Berber villages.

A scenic 30-mile drive away from the city, the Ourika Valley is one of the range’s most popular day trips, with seven waterfalls reached via rocky walking trails.

Ryanair flies from Manchester to Marrakech from around £64 return in March. Riad Charai, a boutique hotel set around a courtyard with a pool, has doubles from £69.

    Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the furthest short-haul destinations (a four-and-a-half-hour flight away), but that extra time in the air should mean better weather on the ground. In an average March, the Canary Island experiences highs of 22.5°C, seven hours of daily sunshine and – crucially – monthly rainfall of just 10mm. Plus there are no rainy days forecast next month.

While the volcanic geology of the Canaries means its beaches are often lined with dark sand, Fuerteventura has an abundance of white and golden grains, both on its shores and in the huge, shifting dunes of Corralejo Natural Park, in the north-east. Enjoy walks and sunset views here, or head west to Betancuria Rural Park for hikes amid peaks, gorges and pretty villages.

Take advantage of the strong winds for which the island is known and try windsurfing or kitesurfing, as well as regular surfing or paddleboarding. Lessons and rentals are available, with the shallower waters at beaches such as Sotavento and Costa Calma perfect for beginners.

Jet2 Holidays offers a week’s B&B at the adults-only Kn Matas Blancas hotel in Costa Calma, from £466pp including flights from Birmingham on 19 March.

    Malta

With its central Mediterranean location, Malta experiences relatively mild March weather, with average highs around 17°C. There is also less than half the rainfall of the winter months – 41mm on average – with only two wet days forecast next month.

The Unesco-listed capital, Valletta, makes the perfect base for a break. Built on a narrow peninsula, the city is awash with honey-hued Baroque architecture, narrow cobbled streets, piazzas and walkable limestone ramparts dating to the 16th century.

Dine al fresco at one of the waterfront restaurants, or head up to the two-Michelin-starred Ion by Simon Rogan for tasting menus with views of the historic “Three Cities” – Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea – across the harbour.

Beyond Valletta, you’ll find the walled Medieval city of Mdina and prehistoric temples at Hagar Qim. Brave the bracing waters for a dip at sandy Golden Bay or rocky St Peter’s Pool, or hop on a boat to the islands of Gozo and Comino, stopping at sea caves and the striking turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon along the way.

Ryanair flies from Stansted to Valletta from around £30 return in March; B&B doubles at the boutique old-town San Karlu Hotel, which has a rooftop pool, start at £131 via Expedia, which also offers hotel-and-flight packages.

Douz and the Grand Erg, Tunisia

Tents at the Dunes Insolites camp site

Where better to escape the rain than the desert? The world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara, covers 3.6 million square miles in 11 North African nations, and Tunisia offers an easy access point.

While March is the wettest month, in reality this means an average of 13mm rainfall, spread across 2.4 days. Expect highs of 24°C, dropping down to about 11°C at night.

Dunes Insolites, near Douz (known as the Gateway to the Sahara) offers overnight stays in tents that have views over the sand dunes, with activities on offer including sandboarding and camel or quad bike rides.

Dinners of traditional Berber dishes are enjoyed around a camp fire with live music and dance performances. Tents start at €49 (£43), or overnight trips from Djerba – including additional meals, visits to Berber villages, troglodyte houses and the markets of Douz – cost from £226pp.

Alternatively, take a longer, guided trek to the Grand Erg – a vast, isolated expanse of Saharan dunes – with Alam Voyages. Departing from Sousse or Djerba, the itinerary includes a couple of hours of trekking each day, accompanied by camels carrying luggage or the occasional guest who is too tired to walk.

Evenings are spent helping to prepare Berber-style meals before camping out under the stars. From €650pp based on four participants, including full board and ground transport.

EasyJet flies from Luton to Djerba from £42 return, with the island’s beaches and souks the perfect pause before or after a Saharan tour.

    Athens

With the Royal Meteorological Society suggesting Greece is likely to see dry weather in the coming weeks, now is the ideal time to book an escape to the capital.

Athens is forecast only one rainy day in March, a month where average rainfall is 24mm and temperatures tend to reach highs of 16°C (compared to 33°C in summer, when wildfires and heat warnings have become regular occurrences).

Immerse yourself in ancient history with a visit to headline sites such as the Acropolis, Parthenon and Temple of Olympian Zeus, followed by one or two of the city’s many museums – all of which will be less crowded than in warmer month. Then, hop between the picturesque (but tourist-heavy) Plaka district and the bars and restaurants of hip neighbourhoods like Keramikos and Metaxourgio.

Fancy a day trip? Take a short ferry ride from Piraeus port to one of the Saronic Gulf islands, such as Aegina, Poros or Hydra, for white-washed villages, pebble beaches and hiking trails.

Aegean flies from Heathrow to Athens from £137 in March (including baggage allowance of 8kg cabin bag). Boutique hotel Coco-Mat Athens BC has doubles overlooking the city, Acropolis Museum or the Acropolis itself, from £99.
