A search is underway for 72-year-old Margaret Hanley, who is missing from her Jacksonville, Florida home, according to authorities and her loved ones.
Hanley is a military veteran who served 23 years in the U.S. Navy, according to her son, Jomo Thompson, who described her as an “independent woman” and a “great all-around mom” during an interview with Action News Jax.
Thompson is concerned his mother was “getting scammed” before she disappeared, he told the TV station.
Hanley was reported missing to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on February 11, according to a news release issued by the agency on Thursday, February 19.
She “was last seen in Hinesville, Georgia, after she left her home in the Oak Hill area of Jacksonville,” the sheriff’s office said.
Hinesville is about a 120-mile drive north from Jacksonville.
Hanley had been at her Jacksonville home on February 9 before she disappeared from the city, according to her family, First Coast News reported.
“My brother and sister, they’re distraught,” Thompson told the outlet. “They’re not eating or sleeping very well. We just want to get our mom home.”

After reporting Hanley as missing, Thompson said he discovered his mother had been sending someone unusual amounts of money after he looked at her banking transactions, according to First Coast News.
This led him to worry that she might have been targeted in a scam.
“She’s a very friendly and smart person,” Thompson told First Coast News. “I just don’t know how someone could’ve taken advantage like that.”
Since she went missing, Thompson told Action News Jax that he has seen withdrawals from her bank account.
It appeared that some of her money had been transferred to a mobile payment app, according to Thompson, the TV outlet reported.
Thompson said that he and his family “don’t even care about the money,” they just want Hanley “back home safe and sound.”
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office described Hanley as 5-foot-11 and weighing 140 pounds. She also has brown eyes, brown hair, and was last known to be wearing a denim dress.
Thompson said Hanley drives a 2001 silver Toyota Rav 4, which pinged in Gainesville and Starke before the vehicle later pinged in Hinesville, Georgia, where authorities said she had last been spotted, Action News Jax reported.

The sheriff’s office shared a photo of Hanley’s vehicle, as well as two photos of her, in the agency’s Facebook post.
Hanley is a member of the Faith Community Church of God in Orange Park, according to a February 13 Facebook post shared by the church about her disappearance.
The church described her as “a proud veteran and cherished extended member of our church” and added that she “is known for their kindness, faith, and unwavering service to both our country and our community.”
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who has seen or spoken with Hanley to call the agency at (904) 630-0500.
“We are working closely with law enforcement in Georgia to find Ms. Hanley, and we are asking for your help to spread the word so we can bring her home safely,” the agency said.
