Dave Grohlspoke publicly for the first time about the decision to fire Josh Freesefrom the Foo Fighters, a move that left the drummer feeling "shocked and disappointed."
When appearing on Apple Music 1's The Zane Lowe Show, Grohl, 57, said the decision "didn't happen overnight." Freese, 53, joined the band in 2023, a year after the death of original drummer Taylor Hawkins. After a year of touring, Grohl said everyone in the Foos decided to step away and refocus.
"In those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and thought, 'OK, let's call Josh and let him know that we are going to move on with a different drummer'," he said. "We called, as a band, all of us called, it wasn't just me."
"Basically, we called Josh, and were like, 'Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer,'" added Grohl. "After that, we didn't make a press release, tweet anything or do interviews. We didn't say anything."
During the interview, Grohl praised Freese for being so talented that he could work with "everyone from Michael Bublé to The Offspring." Freese has been a journeyman drummer, playing with Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa, The Vandals, DEVO, Guns N' Roses, A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. He also has an extensive list of session work, drumming on albums by everyone from Kelly Clarksonto Sting.
That kind of multifaceted professionalism seemed to work against Freese's favor. In a 2025 interview with The New York Times, Freese said that the Foo Fighters' music "wasn't music that I really resonated with."

Grohl brought this comment up in his chat with Zane Lowe. "Since then, there's been a lot of talk about it, but I think Josh said it best when he said that he didn't feel our music really resonated with him, and that's really important," he said.
Since then, the Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails swapped drummers: Freese joined Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their recent tour, while drummer Ilan Rubin joined the Foo Fighters.
When recently speaking with Modern Drummer,Freese noted that since the Foo Fighters are a "big, mainstream band," he has to be careful about what he says about the dismissal. "I did really enjoy the two years I spent with those guys, however, and they were good to me… until they weren't," he said.
"I loved having Dave as a bandleader," he added. "I enjoyed being around those guys, they were generous and good to me… and that's what makes the whole thing even more of a mystery."
On Feb. 19, the band announced their twelfth album, Your Favorite Toy, by sharing the title track. Grohl told Lowe that the new album is full of "noisy, loud bangers" that sound like they're from "the old days" of the band.
