Cardinals break ground on new practice facility with eyes on 2028

PHOENIX — The Arizona Cardinals took another step toward their new performance center and team headquarters with Thursday’s groundbreaking.

As of now, the plot of land positioned at the corner of Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road in northern Phoenix is nothing more than desert and shrubs. But in the not-so-distant future, the new state-of-the-art facility will be a massive upgrade over Arizona’s current digs in Tempe.

It’s been a long time coming for owner Michael Bidwill and the rest of the organization, who expect to be in the new practice facility following training camp in summer 2028.

Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill has a target date of summer 2028 for Arizona’s new performance center and headquarters.

“I’ve been looking at this property for over a decade. I wanted the best possible property for our performance center to make the multi-generational investment that we’re making. And now that the infrastructure is going in up here, we went ahead and move forward and purchase this large piece of property,” Bidwill said.

“We wanted to make sure the Cardinals performance center anchored something for the greater good of the state and for the city of Phoenix. And I think we’ve done that.”

Purchased by the Cardinals at a state land auction for $136 million, the parcel spans 217 acres. Thirty of that and more than 250,000 square feet will be used for the Cardinals performance center and business operations. For comparison, Arizona’s Tempe home spans just 14 acres, less than half of what’s to come in north Phoenix.

Who have Mike LaFleur, Cardinals added to the coaching staff?

That includes three natural grass outdoor practice fields along with a fieldhouse filled with a turf field. Expanded locker rooms and updates to the athletic training, sports medicine and strength and conditioning spaces are also on the way. Meeting rooms, dining areas and a player lounge are also among the expected amenities.

As for the rest of the land? The mixed-use development will include an entertainment district, housing and more.

“This is not just one of the premier parcels of land in the city of Phoenix or Arizona, but in the entire country,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said. “We’re so fortunate that it will be anchored by an iconic landmark with the Cardinals headquarters. That will serve as a catalyst to bring the right type of development to the rest of the site.

“We know it will bring in other global and national partners in sports, innovation, medicine and more. We know that on the field, you need teammates who can work well together to win. I have to say that it’s even more true when it comes to building a local economy that’s built to last.”

Joining Bidwill and Gallego at the groundbreaking included Cardinals players Trey McBride, Budda Baker, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Elijah Higgins.

New head coach Mike LaFleur, who was among the handful of speakers, was also in attendance as he gets used to his new surroundings. Same with general manager Monti Ossenfort and Arizona Commerce Authority president and CEO Sandra Watson, among others.

“(The Tempe facility) feels like home, but this is going to be home in the near future,” LaFleur said. “All you want out of an ownership group and an owner is a commitment. Not only have you said there’s a commitment, you’re showing the commitment. It’s going to benefit all of us, coaches, personnel department, everyone here, but more most importantly, it’s going to benefit these players. It doesn’t guarantee wins, it just gives you a chance to put your best foot forward on Sundays.

“That’s what’s going to be cool. We got a lot of work to do to get to Sunday, but that facility is going to give us that chance to put our best foot forward on that.”
