Bears Bits: Most Intense Practice Yet, Booker, van den Berg, Thomas, More

With a day off on the books for Friday, the Chicago Bears ramped things up today at Halas Hall, turning in, by all accounts, their longest and most physical practice of camp to date. Thursday’s practice was padded, ran for 130 minutes, and featured team periods and 9-on-7 and 9-on-9 running drills.

Edge rusher Austin Booker said after practice that he loved the intensity of the day. “Shoot, we love it,” defensive end Austin Booker said. “That’s our mentality this year: We’re getting off the ball, we’re being aggressive and getting in the backfield.” Booker got off the ball quickly and into the backfield to disrupt a run play here (via @creamsleeve on X):

    — Cream sleeve (@creamsleeve) August 6, 2026 According to multiple people present today, Booker’s speed was on full display, including in a red zone series where he beat Kiran Amegadjie for what would have likely been a sack (via Zack Pearson on X). Booker looking good leans into my belief on this week’s episode of the BN Bears Podcast that a healthy Booker has double-digit sack potential for Chicago. Booker wasn’t the only defensive lineman that drew positive reviews today. As Luis wrote earlier, rookie DT Jordan van den Berg was part of the rotation with the starters. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler quoted Adam Jahns’ tweet on van den Berg, calling it no surprise, and stating the Bears have “big plans” for the sixth-rounder. Even his teammates praised him today, with Booker calling him a “dawg,” and adding, “I think we all see it on the field that he’s a really good player.” The Trib’s Brad Biggs offered up this quote on van den Berg: “Jordan absolutely blew up OL on a rep with the third team… has had two plus reps in 1-on-1 pass rush. Overpowered Logan Jones and shoved Luke Newman aside.” According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, the intensity in the trenches carried into one-on-ones, where newly extended Darnell Wright beat Montez Sweat in all their reps against each other. More: Nah, Darnell Wright Isn’t Moving to Left Tackle

I wrote yesterday about Braxton Jones getting the bulk of the first-team reps every day this week, and Thursday began the same way. Unfortunately, Jones’ day was cut short when he left the field after sustaining an injury in a one-on-one drill with Booker. Montez Sweat also left practice early today with an injury. Sweat was seen leaving the field on his own power with trainers. We’ll wait to see what updates the team offers on Jones and Sweat in the coming days, but the level of concern doesn’t seem too high at this point. On the injury front as well: No update on Kyler Gordon was offered when Ben Johnson was asked this morning, but Shemar Turner was seen on the field for the first time today working off to the side with the strength and conditioning staff. “We’re just continuing to rehab,” Johnson said of Gordon. Both Gordon and Stewart remain on the PUP list. The offense finished the day on a positive note when Caleb Williams found Luther Burden III in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to wrap up a two-minute situational drill (1:41 remaining in the game, offense down 24-21 with two timeouts, ball on their own 35). Here’s a video of that (via @creamsleeve on X):

    — Cream sleeve (@creamsleeve) August 6, 2026 It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the offense, though. This from Cronin: “Caleb Williams finished practice on a high note after the offense struggled with operation issues in 11-on-11. There were multiple false starts, and when Rome Odunze slipped on a route, the ball headed in his direction landed in cornerback Tyrique Stevenson’s hands for an interception.” Veteran wide receiver Kalif Raymond seems to have taken on a big leadership role in the wide receiver room and Johnson’s offense since arriving, and he offered up some praise for rookie Zavion Thomas today. “Along with being incredibly talented, he is a sponge,” Raymond said of Thomas.

CHSN’s Clay Harbor shared some video of the rookie running routes today, and said his routes are improving, and called him “way more than a gadget player.”

Zavion Thomas is a speedster and his routes are improving. Quiet day today but this kid is way more than a gadget player and has a very bright future. Soft natural hands and the right mindset to get better daily. #DaBears #Bears #ChicagoBears pic.twitter.com/FWgqbC1guU

    — Clay Harbor (@clayharbs82) August 6, 2026 Another fun note from Harbor: Jedrick Wills Jr. “continues to flash. Excellent movement skills and plenty of pop.” I’m not sure what Braxton Jones’ injury today was, but Wills, even if only a depth option behind Jones when the season opens, having a good camp is a big positive.
