A Football Transaction: Bears Release Linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga

The Chicago Bears made a move officially official on Thursday by announcing the release of linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga via their Twitter/X PR page.

Parting ways with Ogbongbemiga, who signed in 2024 and was given an extension a year later, is the first of what I expect to be many moves Chicago’s football team makes this offseason. The team began Thursday sitting at more than $5.3 million over the projected $303.5 million salary cap OverTheCap forecasts for the 2026 NFL season. So while cutting Amen Ogbongbemiga isn’t going to get the Bears out of the red, it helps. Ogbongbemiga’s release creates $2.07 million in cap space for 2026. And it does so at the cost of a dead cap hit of only $375,000. Hey, some saving of cap space is better than the alternative.

What’s next for the Bears after cutting Amen Ogbongbemiga?

This was an interesting tweet from the Trib’s Brad Biggs, a long-time Bears reporter:

Would imagine there is a chance the #Bears have roster move(s) in the next 48 hours.Timing of pre-combine veteran releases the last 3 years:2025 – DeMarcus Walker & Gerald Everett, Feb. 212024 – Eddie Jackson & Cody Whitehair, Feb. 152023 – Al-Quadin Muhammad, Feb. 21

The Bears have made it a habit in recent years of making notable cuts ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Biggs brings out some deep pulls with the team announcing the parting of ways with defensive end DeMarcus Walker and tight end Gerald Everett in 2025, safety Eddie Jackson and offensive lineman Cody Whitehair in 2024, and defensive lineman Al-Quadin Muhammad in 2023. These were all cap-clearing moves that ultimately would pave the way for some fresh faces to enter the fray at Halas Hall. So with the NFL Scouting Combine coming up next week, we should be on high alert for transactions.

In late January, teammate Patrick Flowers explored the Bears’ cap situation and made note of some players whose contracts could be restructured (or let go) as the team navigates the cap crunch. Let’s freshen up on some of these names.

    CUT CANDIDATES

Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker: A pre-June 1 cut designation for the veteran linebacker would clear $15 million in cap space, while dealing with only $2.4375 million in dead money. Cutting Edmunds would create a need at linebacker. But after the team coaxed a solid season out of reserve D’Marco Jackson, I am willing to see if Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen can make magic happen again.

D’Andre Swift, running back: Cutting Swift would clear $7.47 million in cap space for the Bears while leaving the team with a $1.333 million dead money hit and a need for another running back. There are intriguing options in free agency, but cutting Swift to create cap space only to spend that cash on his replacement feels kin to robbing Peter to pay Paul. Besides, he wants to stay. Perhaps his public declaration will lead to the two sides coming together on an extension or restructuring that allows that to happen. Syndication: The Post-Crescent

    RESTRUCTURE CANDIDATES

Cole Kmet, tight end: Parting ways with Kmet would clear $8.4 million and leave Chicago with a $3.2 million dead cap hit. But Kmet’s contributions to Head Coach Ben Johnson’s offensive schemee makes him more likely to be a candidate to get a restructured deal (or possibly an extension).  DJ Moore, wide receiver: Moore’s $23.485 million salary is fully guaranteed in 2026. However, a salary conversion could provide the Bears with $17.4 million in cap space. Moore is also a rumored trade candidate Joe Thuney, left guard: The Bears can convert most of Thuney’s 2026 salary into bonuses, which would free up $7.3 million in cap space.
