SGA presidential candidate Kyle Porter said he and his campaign manager planted over 150 signs on the Quad in support of his campaign at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.
He came back to the Quad later that morning to see them being collected by UA grounds staff. Alex House, a UA spokesperson, said that Porter violated a grounds use policy limiting the number of signs allowed per event to 20.
Porter said he filed for and received an approved grounds use permit for his campaign materials. After they were taken down, he spoke with the grounds department over the phone, who told him the issue was that he had too many signs planted on the Quad.
His campaign signs included links to his campaign Instagram, his headshot, mission statement and signs spelling out “RESIST THE MACHINE” in front of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library.
The Machine, officially known as Theta Nu Epsilon, is a select coalition of traditionally white fraternities and sororities designed to influence campus policies.
“We put out seven signs on Monday. Originally, those stayed up until this morning,” Porter said. “When we put up over 150 of our campaign signs, those got taken down.”
According to UA Grounds Department policy, a single campus event may not have more than 20 yard signs. University affiliates are required to complete temporary signage paperwork available on the Grounds Use Permit Coordination webpage.
Porter said he was told he could keep 20 signs on the Quad, which is consistent with University policy. He used 17 of those 20 signs to once again spell out “RESIST THE MACHINE” under the United States and Alabama flags outside Gorgas Library.
“Extra signs around the Quad were removed and returned, but signs near Gorgas Library were allowed to remain,” House said. “Applications for use of campus grounds require acknowledgement of UA policy and procedures. Permission decisions on displaying materials on campus are made on a viewpoint neutral basis.”
