Former Michigan Coach Scores Legal Win, Judge Cites ‘Glaring’ Concern

Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore scored a victory in court on Tuesday, February 17, while seeking to have the charges against him dropped.

Judge J. Cedric Simpson granted a request for a hearing to learn more about the circumstances surrounding Moore’s arrest, which came in December 2025, just hours after he was fired from his job at the university over an alleged inappropriate relationship with a female staff member.

Moore, 40, was charged with felony home invasion, stalking and illegal entry after allegedly breaking into the apartment of the staff member, threatening to harm her and take his own life.

On Tuesday, Judge Simpson said it was “a glaring omission” that Moore’s previous relationship with the woman was not disclosed by a police detective when a magistrate authorized a warrant for his arrest.

“Defendant’s due process may have been violated,” Simpson said, adding, “This was not solely this personal relationship. The magistrate should have been able to look at that.”

The judge set a hearing for March 2 to hear from police and other witnesses involved in the case.

“Judge Simpson got it right in this motion and due process matters,” Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, told reporters outside court on Tuesday, with the former coach standing by her side. “Coach Moore maintains his innocence and the truth will come out.”

Michaels initially sought to have the charges against Moore dropped during a probable cause conference on January 22.

At the time, Michaels claimed Moore’s arrest warrant was “based on false and misleading statements presented as fact.”

“We’re confident the truth will come out in court under oath where it belongs,” Michaels continued. “Mr. Moore and his family respectfully ask for your privacy.”

Sherrone was joined by his wife, Kelli Moore, at the court date in January, though she did not appear to be in attendance on Tuesday.

The couple have been married since 2015 and share three daughters: Shiloh, born in 2019, Solei, born in 2022, and Sadie, born in 2025.

Kelli called 911 shortly after her husband was terminated by the University of Michigan, telling dispatchers she was concerned for his well-being.

“I’m worried that my husband is going to hurt himself,” Kelli said on the call in audio obtained by TMZ Sports in January. “Can you guys track his phones?”

When Kelli was asked why she was concerned for Sherrone, she said, “He said he is trying to kill himself.”

“He just called me and said he got fired from his job. He’s in crisis,” she added. “I told him that I love him and that I need him to come home. But I don’t know where he is. He said he was at a highway.”

Sherrone was taken into custody shortly after the call was made, having been tracked to a local church parking lot.

After pleading not guilty to all charges, the former football coach was released on $25,000 bond and ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.
