In 2024, Pasadena purchased 17 homes from Caltrans. The homes were among the 460 properties in Pasadena, South Pasadena and El Sereno that the agency seized from residents in the 1950s, 60s and 70s as part of a failed project to connect the northern stub of the 710 freeway with the 210 freeway.
The properties were vacant when Pasadena purchased them from Caltrans. State law requires that the city fund three affordable housing units for every Caltrans unit purchased using sales proceeds from the sales.
