Draft Order, Working with Cabrera, Brewers Signing, Padres Deals, and Other Cubs Bullets

At the end of this week, Chicago Cubs baseball games will begin. Fake? Yeah, basically. But I’ll absolutely still take it …

With Zac Gallen returning to the Diamondbacks, as opposed to surprisingly signing with the Cubs, we can now officially say the Cubs will have three draft picks in the top-75 this year (23, 62, 75), and that’s pretty cool. It’ll be the Cubs’ largest bonus pool allotment in a little while, too. Let Dan Kantrovitz cook. This is exactly the attitude you want to see (and Edward Cabrera does in fact have the talent to be a stud and back it up):

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 13, 2026 A reminder that having a guy join his first new organization is not only an opportunity (the potential to unlock more with new eyes, new techniques, new approaches, etc.), but also a challenge. “I think the challenge for [Cabrera] is just new team, really,” Craig Counsell said, per the Sun-Times. “So we want to make sure we get that part of this right. He was 10 years in one place with a lot of the same people. For the first time, you come to a new place; it’s a hard thing to do. And there’s a lot of new faces and new ideas being thrown at you. So [pitching coach Tommy Hottovy] and I, we want to go slow here because of that.” Good point. The opportunity is there, but only if you first very carefully acclimate the guy to a new organization (especially in a trade situation, where this is a guy who had no courting process, no pre-discussed scouting approaches, and no time to make his own decision). The Brewers kinda filled the hole that emerged as a result of sending three third basemen to the Red Sox in the Caleb Durbin trade, signing former Angels infielder Luis Rengifo to a $3.5 million deal (plus up to $1.5 million in incentives). Rengifo, 29 later this month, looked like a real breakout guy a couple years ago, but biceps and wrist injuries may have permanently changed that trajectory. In 2025, he hit just .238/.287/.335/73 wRC+, and the power seemed to have really faded. The Brewers are betting he can turn that around a bit; he does offer good speed and switch-hits, and can play pretty well anywhere on the field. Decent player to have, but not sure he’ll actually replace Durbin’s value. Small bonus on the Shelby Miller signing? He spent the end of last season, and through the playoff series against the Cubs, with the Brewers. Not impossible to imagine, for one example, he has some very-recent tips to share with the Cubs, if willing, on how the Brewers were attacking Cubs hitters. Maybe nothing shared at all, or maybe nothing the Cubs didn’t already know. But nice to be able to ask now that he’s part of your organization for multiple years and is invested in the team’s success. If you missed it, I earlier discussed the implications of the Ben Cowles DFA to accommodate Miller (instead of Justin Steele going on the 60-day IL). It’s worth the conversation, even if I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up about a surprise early Steele return. Things are going well with his rehab, though, as you can read in the Sun-Times. This is the same as when Jed Hoyer got Eric Hosmer for “pennies on the dollar,” but it’s nice to see Nick Castellanos landed somewhere he’s appreciated:

Manny Machado, who has known Nick Castellanos since they were kids in Miami, says Padres GM AJ Preller deserves an extension for ‘getting a $20 million player for pennies on the dollar.’

    — Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) February 15, 2026 Funny thing about that Machado quote:

The Padres announce they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller. pic.twitter.com/wQPYy8csJ7

    — Sammy Levitt (@SammyLev) February 16, 2026 More Padres: in addition to Castellanos, they’re reportedly adding Ty France (who would seemingly compete directly with Castellanos for ABs), German Marquez, and Griffin Canning. A flurry of minor moves involving name players here at the outset of Spring Training. It makes sense, as they don’t necessarily have a lot of money to work with, but do have opportunities and a competitive roster. Technically, Dave Dombrowski said only that Bryce Harper’s 2025 season was not elite (which it obviously wasn’t), but it’s still been quite an issue:

Bryce Harper was not pleased with Dave Dombrowski saying he's not elite"I don't get motivated by that… When we first met with this organization, it was we're always gonna keep things in house… For Dave to say that, it's kinda wild."pic.twitter.com/sxtdsEX1ce
