Several people were displaced after an apartment fire in the south suburbs Saturday morning, authorities said.
The fire broke out at 123rd and Bishop Streets early Saturday, according to authorities.
Charlene Davis is among those now forced to rebuild. She showed NBC Chicago what’s left of her apartment.
“Mentally I’m not okay, every now and then I start crying because I lost everything,” she said. “I have nothing except for what I have on—it’s just hard, it’s hard, how do you come back from this you know.”
Davis told NBC Chicago she was asleep when she woke up to a loud noise.
“I heard a loud boom, boom, then I got up and when I entered into my living room I could smell the smoke,” she said. “I could feel the fire beneath my feet because the floor was so hot.”
She immediately got out and called 911.
“I went door to door knocking on everybody’s door letting them know that the boiler room was on fire,” she said.
The Calumet Park Fire Department responded to the two-story apartment building and had to call for additional manpower and resources to knock out the flames. The response was elevated to a three-alarm fire.
“About 6:30 this morning [we got] a report of smoke detectors going off, they arrived on scene, saw fire, and began attack and with that being said right now we’re in the investigation stage,” said Lt. Robert Lobianco, Calumet Park Fire Department.
A firefighter was also treated at the hospital for what appears to be a minor injury. Video shows him being loaded into an ambulance.
Some residents returned to see if anything was salvageable as crews began boarding up the units.
“A nice fireman I don’t know his name or who he was, but he went back in, he got my mother’s urn for me because I kept telling him, I was like, my mommy’s urn is in there—please go get it and then he did,” Davis shared.
Davis is grateful for what he did and that everyone made it out safely. She and other neighbors are waiting to see how the investigation plays out.
“We had no heat, and they [management] just came and fixed the heat, the boiler, and so now then this happened you know,” she said. “It’s like what do we do and now all these people are displaced.”
The American Red Cross was called to help residents impacted in 16 units.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
