Nationally ranked Dominick Serrano of Windsor was one of three winners for the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team in the Bears’ 25-10 dual loss to Wyoming on Friday evening.
Serrano, ranked 11th at 133 pounds, scored a major decision with a 15-3 victory over No. 23 Luke Willochell at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley. Serrano’s win was one of three for the Bears in the Big XII Conference dual against the 24th ranked Cowboys.Daishun Powe at 157 and 174-pounder Murphy Menke also won their matches. Menke beat No. 28 Riley Davis on a tie breaker. Powe won in an 11-4 decision over Antonio Avila.
The meet was the second to last home dual for UNC. The Bears host Utah Valley at 1 p.m. Sunday on UNC’s senior day at Bank of Colorado Arena.
Serrano is a graduate student in his final collegiate season. He has a 12-1 record, according to The Open Mat and he’s been UNC’s best wrestler all season. Serrano had a 5-0 record at the prestigious Southern Scuffle last month and was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.
His only loss this season was to No. 3 Evan Frost of Iowa State. Frost beat Serrano 7-1 in a conference dual in late January.
Serrano, a four-time high school state champion at Windsor, was 18-2 overall record a year ago and won a Big XII championship for the first time. Serrano went to the NCAA Championships as the fifth seed at 133 but did not place.
