Happy Valentine’s Day!
Here’s hoping that a Cubs World Series will “Be Mine” in 2026.

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) May 6, 2025 Yesterday, Zac Gallen finally re-signed with the Diamondbacks, ending the Cubs saga that Bruce Levine (and let’s be honest, I, too, because I wanted it to happen) was keeping alive. At first, accepting this deal (which equals the Qualifying Offer he had rejected) seemed like no harm, no foul. As in, he didn’t lose any money by rejecting the QO and waiting so long to pick a team. But today, we learn that $14M of his $22.05M is actually being deferred. According to the reports, Gallen will get that $14 million spread out over five years, starting six years from now. That stings. But also, I’m sure he’s not sweating it too much. The entire point was to avoid being locked down beyond this season, when he won’t be attached to draft pick compensation. In fact, according to Jon Heyman, Gallen actually turned down multiple multi-year offers, potentially even from the Cubs, as we suspected: “The Cubs, Padres and Angels were among the other teams interested in his services.” Alas. I think the Cubs played it right by not giving him the first-year opt-out. But I also think the Diamondbacks are about to get a pretty great performance out of him on what amounts to a very affordable deal overall. There’s nothing wrong with the quiet, humble Kyle Hendricks(s) of the world, but I love this attitude from Edward Cabrera. It’s giving Jake Arrieta."With all due respect to everyone, whenever I step on the mound, I think I'm the best."Edward Cabrera is confident ? pic.twitter.com/43VwDfmmCt
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 13, 2026 I’m sure I’m just buying into the hype of his leadership skills because I want to, but I feel better about Pete Crow-Armstrong’s ongoing development now that Alex Bregman is around. Bregman just feels like someone who’s going to hold him accountable while also leading by example."I think the sky's the limit for (PCA). I think he can do anything on a baseball field … he's just gonna continue to get better and better and better."Alex Bregman is excited to play with PCA ? pic.twitter.com/WyDjcT6dqh
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 13, 2026 I think Nico Hoerner is probably a very good role model in that capacity, as well. So get on that extension, Cubs. It’s time. Is this not the entire Kyle Tucker experience in one clip:The #1 free agent Kyle Tucker is here pic.twitter.com/3h7JNnWhTg
— Doug McKain (@DMAC_LA) February 13, 2026 Like, I’m sure that’s just a funny coincidence. Guys are standing around all the time. It’s baseball, and it’s Spring Training. But still. That’s just Kyle Tucker in a nutshell, right there. Really makes me laugh. I don’t love that it’s with an NL team who could be a serious issue for the Cubs this season, but I am very interested to see what kind of year Brad Keller has.Brad Keller broke through as a reliever last season.
