A Lake County correctional deputy from Willits is suspected of sexually assaulting an inmate two years ago.
Daniel Constancio Jr., 37, surrendered Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, and was booked into the Mendocino County jail, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Jail records show he was booked into jail about 2 p.m. and released three hours later after posting $10,000 bail.
Prosecutors have not filed charges in the case as of Friday morning and it’s unclear when Constancio will make his first appearance in Lake County Superior Court.
For now, jail records show he’s accused of sexual penetration by threat and oral copulation in a correctional facility, both felonies. Constancio is also facing a misdemeanor allegation of intimate touching against a victim’s will.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, criminal and internal affairs investigations began in September 2025 after officials got a report of an alleged sexual assault in early 2024 at the Lake County Jail in North Lakeport.
The matter involves an inmate who is not currently incarcerated.
Public employee records show Constancio has been a Lake County correctional deputy since at least 2020. Most recent data shows he was paid $94,409 in 2024, including $68,255 in regular pay and $20,685 in overtime.
An investigation began while Constancio was on protected leave for reasons not specified by the Sheriff’s Office. Protected leave in California involves mattes like pregnancy, medical conditions or family emergencies.
Constancio was then placed on paid administrative leave while the criminal investigation progressed, officials said.
He surrendered to authorities the same day they obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
