Nick Foles Finally Gives the Bears Their Due Credit For the Philly Special

Thanks to Nick Foles, the Chicago Bears are *FINALLY* getting the credit they deserve for the Philly Special.

This makes for quite the story (even if we already knew it from the moment it happened):

I am sitting with Matt Barkley at dinner. We were just talking ball and the Philly Special came up. The Eagles found the play from a Week 17 game the year prior that Matt ran with the Bears. The crazy thing is, they ran the play in Minnesota, in what appears to be the same end…

Nick Foles gives more backstory to the Philly Special

The full post text from Nick Foles on Twitter/X:

I am sitting with Matt Barkley at dinner. We were just talking ball and the Philly Special came up. The Eagles found the play from a Week 17 game the year prior that Matt ran with the Bears. The crazy thing is, they ran the play in Minnesota, in what appears to be the same end zone that the Philly Special was ran in SB LII. Did anyone realize the Philly Special was run in the same stadium the season before? I guess that is a new Philly Special fun fact.

REMEMBER WHEN NICK FOLES SAID STUFF THAT MADE US WRITE SOME STUFF?

First of all, I love that a pair of former Bears quarterbacks are just talking ball over dinner. Foles appeared in 10 games (8 starts) in two seasons with Chicago’s football team. It was a mostly unremarkable run for the Super Bowl LII MVP. However, I’ll always be fond of Foles for engineering that wild come-from-behind win against the Atlanta Falcons in relief of Mitchell Trubisky and the veteran QB’s willingness to keep it real when discussing Matt Nagy’s floundering offense. He was a breath of fresh air.

As for Barkley, he made seven appearances with the Bears (including six starts) in 2016. He threw more interceptions (14) than touchdowns (8). But he had a 362-yard passing game against the Packers in Week 15 of that season and followed it up with a second 300+ yard game a week later against Washington. Despite throwing for 685 yards in those two games, Barkley posted a 67.2 passer rating and tossed twice as many picks (8) as he did touchdowns (4). Nevertheless, it was a weird and wild time to watch Bears football.

And how’s this for an additional layer of intrigue. It turns out that new Bears Offensive Coordinator Press Taylor is the staffer working for then-Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson who unearthed the footage of the play that ultimately turned into the world-famous Philly Special:

Between Nick Foles, Matt Barkley, and Press Taylor, it turns out that the Philly Special has a distinct Chicago flavor.

The promotion of Press Taylor to offensive coordinator might not have been the most popular pick among Bears fans. But to learn that he was the guy who did the grunt work that led to one of the biggest plays in NFL history gives me some confidence that he can do the same while working for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson.
