The Greeley-Weld County Airport Authority will begin its next phase of key projects to become a primary Colorado airport with additional funding from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airport received $3.5 million in funding from the FAA, secured by U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, adding to the $1.2 million in federal grants that were awarded in September. Greeley-Weld County Airport Director Cooper Anderson said the funds are coming from the Community Project Funding program through the U.S. House of Representatives, which allows representatives to direct funding toward specific local projects.
“As a former pilot in the Colorado Army National Guard who flew many missions to and from the Greeley Airport, I’m so proud to deliver $3.5 million in funding for the Greeley-Weld County Airport Authority,” Evans said in a news release. “This investment strengthens airfield safety and efficiency while supporting long-term capacity, job creation, and economic growth across the Eighth District and Northern Colorado.”
This funding will support Phase 2 of the Bravo and Echo Taxiway Complex, which will improve aircraft circulation, reduce runway crossings and enhance access to critical portions of the airfield. These improvements will support operational safety and long-term capacity for military, business and transient aircraft, according to airport officials.
These improvements to the airport are the result of a 2024 partnership between Weld County and the city of Greeley to strengthen the runway and enable it to support commercial airlines. The project aims to leverage the airport’s longer-than-average runway to expand it into a larger commercial airport, similar to the Colorado Springs airport.
“This funding allows us to continue making strategic, safety-driven investments in our airfield,” Anderson said. “The Bravo and Echo taxiway system is a critical component of our overall layout, and Phase 2 will strengthen our ability to operate safely and efficiently while positioning the airport for future growth.”
On Feb. 6, the Colorado Aeuronautical Board approved $12 million in funding to support aviation infrastructure improvements at airports across the state. Though the Greeley-Weld County Airport was not among the 20 airports to receive this round of funding, Anderson confirmed it will be included in the next round in April.
Anderson estimated the funding will be about $400,000 but said that number could change. These funds from the Colorado Aeuronautical Board would be used for a fog seal and repaint of Runway 17/35 and the adjacent Charlie Taxiway.
Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross said the county is in the design phase for the Bravo and Echo Taxiway Complex. The county expects to begin construction in early summer and complete the complex before the end of this summer.
