REPORT: Shelby Miller Signs Multi-Year Deal with the Cubs

Hey, it’s another multi-year deal for a free agent reliever! According to Robert Murray, the Cubs have signed free agent reliever Shelby Miller to a multi-year, major league contract. But before you get too excited about the latest addition to the roster, there is a bit of a (gigantic) catch: Miller won’t pitch for the Cubs this season. Well, almost certainly not.

Alas.

Shelby Miller Signs Multi-Year Pact with Cubs

Although Shelby Miller, now 35, has been a very valuable reliever over the last few years, including a 1.98 ERA over 37 games with the Diamondbacks last season, he didn’t even make it 10 innings with the Brewers (who acquired him at the trade deadline) before tearing his UCL and needing Tommy John surgery.

So that means that this deal is more of a long-term play for the Cubs, who will help Miller rehab throughout 2026 and look for him to contribute in 2027 and beyond, when he’s 36+ years old. I suppose there’s always an outside shot at a quick return for this Fall, but I don’t think anyone should count on that, and I’m sure the Cubs are not.

As you’ll recall, this is also the second time the Cubs have signed Shelby Miller (they also almost traded for him once upon a time). They first brought him in on a minor league deal back in 2021. Back then, he did briefly make the big league team, but was injured, sent to the minors, and eventually DFA’d and released early in the season.

He has rebounded since then, though, starting with the Dodgers back in 2023:

    2023 (LAD): 42.0 IP, 1.71 ERA (3.32 xERA), 25.8 K%, 11.7 BB% 2024 (DET): 55.2 IP, 4.53 ERA (3.76 xERA), 21.8 K%, 5.8 BB% 2025 (ARI): 36.1 IP, 1.98 ERA (3.32 xERA), 28.0 K%, 7.7 BB% 2025 (MIL): 9.2 IP, 5.59 ERA (4.17 xERA), 32.6 K%, 9.3 BB%

There’s obviously a lot there to like – and the Cubs have clearly liked him for a while – but you just KNOW their internal models must love his stuff to give a 36-year-old Tommy John recoveree multiple years on a big league deal.

Miller also has a funny, Cubs-related career arc.

For one, he got his start with the Cardinals, who took him in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Miller made his debut with the Cardinals in 2012 and eventually finished as a Rookie of the Year finalist for them the following season. A couple of years later, the Cardinals traded Miller to the Braves in the deal for future Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward. And then, a year later, the Braves traded him to the Diamondbacks in the deal for future Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson.

Around that same time, there were high-profile rumors of the Cubs trading Javy Baez to the Braves for Miller. And then, as I mentioned, they signed him to a minor league deal back in 2021.

Ultimately, I’m not surprised Shelby Miller chose the Cubs. They have an increasingly impressive pitching infrastructure and a series of success stories for guys like him. He’s also been with the organization before, which tends to be a prerequisite for this sort of multi-year rehab deal. I am, by contrast, a little surprised to see the Cubs reciprocate on a big league deal for multiple years. Again, they must really like him. Here’s hoping for a quick rehab and some big innings ahead of him on the North Side of Chicago.
