Canadian Championships finalist Mia Thomas has announced her commitment to swim for the University of Minnesota beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I am pleased to announce my commitment to the University of Minnesota!!! I want to thank my coach Bill, my friends and my family for all the support and help during this process. I would also like to say a thank you to all the coaches at Minnesota, especially to coach Maddy and Stacy for this amazing opportunity. I am so excited to continue both my athletic and academic career at such a great university. Go Gophers!!!”
A native of Ontario, Canada, Thomas currently trains year-round with Toronto Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in distance freestyle and butterfly.
A strong competitor, Thomas has been racing at high-level national and international competitions for several years now. She turned in a string of top swims at the 2025 Canadian Swimming Trials (LCM) in June. She logged three new lifetime best times, placing 2nd in the timed finals of the 200 free (2:05.25), 6th in the finals of the 400 free (4:18.59) and 9th in the 800 free (9:05.99). She also took 7th in the 1500 free (17:20.08) and 25th in the 100 free (58.81), setting season-best times in both events.
At the Ontario Championships (LCM) a few weeks later, Thomas earned a second swim in each of her individual races. She took 2nd in the 400 free (4:20.72), 800 free (9:05.20 – PB) and 1500 free (17:28.45), in addition to placing 8th in the 200 free (2:06.46). She also placed 18th in the 100 fly in 1:05.43 after posting a best time of 1:04.53 during prelims.
Thomas is also adept at racing short course meters. At the Speedo Canadian (25m) Championships in August, Thomas clocked a handful of personal best performances. She took the runner-up spot in the 1500 free (16:39.10) and placed 4th in 800 free (8:47.16), 8th in the 400 free (4:18.66) and 6th in the 200 free (2:00.86), posting a lifetime best in all but the 200 free.
In October, Thomas competed at the World Aquatics World Cup stop in Toronto (SCM), where she placed 9th in the 800 free (8:53.81), 22nd in the 400 free (4:24.24) and 26th in the 200 free (2:03.49).
Thomas recently enjoyed a tremendous meet at the Ontario Junior International (SCM) in December, walking away with new lifetime bests in five events. She placed 2nd in the 400 free (4:10.85 – PB), 3rd in the 800 free (8:39.28 – PB), 4th in the 1500 free (16:41.80) and 5th in the 200 free (1:59.34 – PB). She also logged a new best time in the 100 free (56.52) as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.
Best Times SCM (SCY Conversion)
100 free – 56.52 (50.91) 200 free – 1:59.34 (1:47.51) 400/500 free – 4:10.85 (4:46.68) 800/1000 free – 8:39.28 (9:53.46) 1500/1650 free – 16:39.10 (16:33.14)A Division I program, Minnesota competes in the Big Ten Conference, with the women’s team placing 6th out of 14th teams at the 2025 conference championships. The Gophers sent six athletes on to compete at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, where they finished 27th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2025 Big Ten Conference Championships, it took times of 49.60/1:47.11/4:46.00 in the 100/200/500 free, putting Thomas just outside the cutoff based on her projected converted times. She would have placed 25th in the 1650 free, again placing her just outside of scoring range.
On the team itself, Thomas would have ranked 2nd in the 500 free and 1650 free, 3rd in the 200 free and 1000 free and 8th in the 100 free last season, putting her in a position to be a strong contributor throughout the year. We’ll have to wait and see how the time standings shake out after the conclusion of this competition season, but Thomas should be in a strong position when she arrives on campus in the fall.
Currently set to join Thomas in the Twin Cities in the fall are Dana Fairbanks, Faith Lamah, Claire Conklin, Emma Meyer, Sara Reppucci, Signe Stahle and Libbi McCarthy, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
