Last year during the offseason pursuit of Alex Bregman, and then again throughout his year with the Boston Red Sox, we heard about the impact he has on other players. It was sufficiently consistent refrain that I believed it to be true, but I was still pretty eager to experience it with the Cubs. I knew the stories would come eventually.
In fact, the first arrived even as Jed Hoyer was introducing the Cubs’ new third baseman, sharing that Bregman immediately wanted scouting reports on his new teammates and an understanding of what they were working on so that he could speak the same language with them, so to speak. He wanted to meet with the minor league development staff so he could also understand the organization’s philosophy for the young players with whom he might soon interact. It was pretty incredible.
Now, with Spring Training having officially started, we’re getting even more.
For example, here’s an anecdote from new Cubs lefty Hoby Milner, via Ken Rosenthal:
‘So there was left-hander Hoby Milner at the Chicago Cubs Convention last month, minding his business and meeting new teammates, when Alex Bregman engaged him in conversation ….
“He let me know of a tip they had on me. He let me know of two tips,” Milner said, referring to something in his body language that indicated to the hitter what type of pitch he was about to throw.
“I knew one of ‘em already. The other one I didn’t. I guess we never caught it with the Rangers. And he knew it off the top of his head. He didn’t have to go to his notes and pull it up. He had thought about it enough to remember.”’
Their very first meeting as teammates, at the fan convention, and Alex Bregman is immediately giving Hoby Milner a heads up about his pitch tips. Good sign.
Also a good sign? Rosenthal’s piece mentions Bregman already talking to Pete Crow-Armstrong about his plate approach, in a way that sounds very much like he’s lifting PCA up, rather than picking apart the things that he needs to work on. If Pete Crow-Armstrong’s chase rate goes down appreciably this year without harming his overall production, he’ll deserve most of the credit. The coaching staff, too. But I’m thinking Alex Bregman is going to have been in that mix.
