Parents, parishioners fight to keep suburban Catholic school from closing

A group of parents and parishioners are fighting to keep St. Hubert’s open, with the Catholic school having been in Hoffman Estates for more than 60 years.

Those fighting to save it say this isn’t just about clinging to a building that’s been around for 65 years, but that it’s about honoring a legacy and fostering community.

“This is the only Catholic school in this area. We have to stand up and prevent it from closing,” said Holly Roach.

“I was blessed to go through this school, and I want other kids to have that same experience that I did,” added Gwen Wilke.

In late January, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced that it will close a half-dozen schools at the end of the current school year, including St. Hubert’s.

Officials blamed low enrollment at the schools for the decision, which will be implemented at the conclusion of the school year this summer.

“I feel the numbers have been changed and the goal posts changed as we are fundraising,” said Julie Chirinos.

Now, a grassroots coalition says they’ll fight to keep it open. They have filed an official appeal, hired a forensic accountant, and launched a GoFundMe.

Under Canon Law, they have the right to appeal such decisions—first to Cardinal Blase J. Cupich and, if necessary, to the Vatican.

To support their appeal, the coalition is working with a leading expert in Canon Law, a forensic accountant and certified fraud examiner. They say an analysis shows St. Hubert can achieve positive cash flow through modest, common-sense budget adjustments.

“This school is viable and that is part of our appeal,” Garcia said. “We are asking Cardinal Cupich to look at look at the numbers. Do the right thing.”

“We are so ready to fight,” said Dr. Michelle Flowers. “We are fighting for other schools that have been shut down and the next schools on the chopping block. After the 20 days are up – we will take this fight to the Vatican. It is not a good look for the Pope to have all the Catholic schools in his hometown shut down.”

In a statement, the Archdiocese wrote:

“These decisions were made with heavy hearts after months of discussions with each school. We know the importance of these schools in each community. Unfortunately, the enrollment of each school is too low, and the ongoing deficits are too high. Many people have worked hard at each school to raise money and try to boost enrollment. We recognize and value those efforts but, in the end, the schools were not able to close the gaps, and they are no longer sustainable.”
